A modern frontier

Throughout Oklahoma City's history, its frontier has continued to expand. According to local Realtors, the city's landlocked location buffers its housing market from the volatilities of the coasts. Suburban neighborhoods like Fisher Hills in Edmond, with their wide streets, good schools and spacious parks, are a product of that expansion. Fisher Hills is just one square mile inside hundreds of this Modern Frontier, as the OKC tourist board calls the city, but it's a microcosm of the lifestyle, amenities and relative affordability that have made the OKC housing market as hot as any in the nation.

Postwar ramblers and modern farmhouses

According to Seth Bullard, a Realtor from Keller Williams Central Oklahoma, "There's a huge range of prices in the area, anywhere from $150,000 to $800,000, depending on size and condition." Homes here run the gamut from the ubiquitous brick ranch-style to the Cape Cod-inspired to the neocolonial to the modern farmhouse, but a few midcentury modern beauties come up on the market every so often. Something about the near-flat roofs, brick walls and window walls common to this style makes them fit in perfectly on these slow, arid streets of towering oaks and maples under the big sky. Three-bedroom versions on lots landscaped with boxwoods and redbuds are listed for under $300,000. At the top of the market, massive new constructions looking like a cross between a modern farmhouse and a neo-Tudor with four bedrooms on acre-sized lots in new luxury subdivisions are listed for under $700,000.

Renovated parks with Arcadia Lake a few miles away

The 3-acre Ted Anderson Park is being renovated to include a splash pad and a new playscape. Bickham-Rudkin Park is a 50-acre green space on the southern border of Fisher Hills with a dog park, a fishing pond and over a mile of multi-use trails. A 5-mile drive east, Spring Creek Park occupies 200 acres next to the 2,000-acre Arcadia Lake, where visitors may camp, swim, boat and hike. Anglers are drawn to the covered dock, allowing year-round fishing for local catfish and bass varieties.

Some of the best schools in the state

Bullard says, "Edmond is a very highly sought-after school district." The district is ranked among the top three in the state. Orvis Risner Elementary School received an A from the school rankings website Niche, as did Cimarron Middle School and Memorial High School. Memorial High is a National Blue Ribbon school. Oklahoma Christian Academy is a popular private school in Fisher Hills.

A short drive downtown

OKC's Embark public transportation system doesn't extend this far north, but drivers living in Fisher Hills have an easy time getting anywhere in the region thanks to its proximity to the intersection of Interstates 35 and 44. The Oklahoma State Capitol is an 11-mile drive south along US Route 77, or the Broadway Extension Highway.

Organic groceries and chain restaurants

There's a shopping district in the southwest corner of Fisher Hills. At the intersection of East 33rd Street and S Boulevard, patrons will find an outpost of regional organic supermarket Natural Grocers, fast food branches and a local Thai restaurant. Bowlero Edmond, a branch of a veteran local chain, is nearby. Foodies looking to venture out will be pleased to know Cafe 501, a traditional American restaurant just over a mile north in Downtown Edmond, is on Eater Magazine's list of 15 Essential Restaurants in Oklahoma City.
