Neighborhood offers tranquil contrast to nearby airport bustle
Edmondson MO may be a mile from the St. Louis Lambert International Airport, but its vibe couldn’t be more different. Residents leave behind the hubbub when entering this neatly laid out neighborhood of mostly ranch-style homes. Renters and homeowners are split almost equally in this moderately priced neighborhood. Despite being so close to the airport, Edmundson’s a quiet spot, said Lauren Broughton, a real estate agent with EXP Realty, LLC.
“It’s a quaint quiet little part of St. Louis,” she says.
One reason the neighborhood stays quiet is its 20-mile-per-hour speed limit, says Broughton, who’s been selling in the area for nine years.
Modest ranch-style homes predominate in mid-Century era neigbhorhood
Edmondson’s mostly brick or vinyl ranch-style homes line the narrow streets under the shade of mature trees. Its two- or three-bedroom homes typically have one bathroom and sell for the low- to mid-$100,000s. This price point makes Edmundson a good choice for first-time homebuyers or for investors interested in purchasing a rental property. Most of the homes are ranch-style but it also includes a few two-story homes, including Cape Cod- or raised ranch-styles, which offer more interior space. Most of the neighborhood’s 1950s- and 1960s-built homes have a one-car garage and a short private driveway. Residents can plant gardens or play catch in front and back yards. Kids run around, race their bikes and play in the streets whose speed limit is strictly enforced. Black wrought iron-look streetlamps light the way for evening strolls and bike rides. Narrow sidewalks line some streets while others have wider sidewalks.
Ritenour School District changing the game in math education
Young students begin school at Kratz Elementary, right in the neighborhood, and move on to Hoech Middle School, three miles away. Older students attend Ritenour High School, two miles away. All three schools earn a C-minus from Niche. The middle and high schools are both less than four miles from Edmunson. The Ritenour School District’s new Level Up Math Challenge offers students a gamified program to help them hone their math skills outside of school. The online program includes a physical game board that aims to reinforce skills learned in the classroom. Students who complete monthly challenges receive incentives.
Driving's optional thanks to convenient public transportation options
Edmonson offers instant access to Interstate 70, one mile away. Public transportation is a cinch with the airport so close. The St. Louis Metro Link light rail has 38 stations serving the city of St. Louis, St. Louis County and St. Clair County in Illinois. Locals can also catch St. Louis MetroBuses and Greyhound buses at the airport.
Italian dining, groceries and pinball within three miles
Locals are just half a mile away from the iconic Lombardo’s restaurant which continues to serve lunch and dinner on white tablecloths as it has done since 1934. Come Friday, residents head to The Waiting Room bar 2 miles away where they shake off the work week with pinball and a beer. Three miles away along St. Charles Rock Road, residents grab groceries at Aldi or home improvement supplies from Menard’s.
Locals walk and play at their own Edmundson Park
Neighbors hang out at Edmundson Park, where their kids can choose from two playground stations. Adults get their steps in along the park’s walking track which includes exercise stations. The park’s compact layout allows adults to take a walk or kick back at a picnic table without losing sight of their little ones.
Neighbors celebrate seasons with year-round events
Edmundson Park buzzes with activity every season, from splash pad play in the summer to concerts with free hot dogs in the fall to an annual holiday light display in the winter.
