Golfing and laid-back living in Lake Lorraine Estates

From April through October, vacationers from across the U.S. flock to the Florida panhandle for fun in the sun, but homeowners in Lake Lorraine Estates get to experience laid-back living all year round. Situated around Shalimar Pointe Golf Course and only 4 miles from Eglin Air Force Base, the neighborhood has long been a favorite of Okaloosa County's military community. “It’s so close to the base that you can hear the 5 a.m. whistle and 'Taps' in the evening,” says Bruce McAdoo, a real estate agent with ERA American Real Estate and a former resident of the neighborhood. “Lake Lorraine Estates has been one of the footholds for many retired and active-duty military families, and golfers. There’s a longevity of families there, and it’s not unusual to see people living there generationally.”

Customer homes and waterfront estates

The neighborhood’s serene streets are lined with mature oaks and flowering pink and white crape myrtles. Most of the community’s custom-built homes were built in the 1970s and ’80s with brick siding, lush lawns and two-car garages, some bordering the golf course or sitting along Choctawhatchee Bay. “It’s one of Shalimar’s premier neighborhoods. Everyone’s very friendly, and you know most of the neighbors in the area,” says Mark Gauthier, a resident of 13 years and a real estate agent at ERA American Real Estate. “People love the lot sizes. The houses are not right on top of each other. The lot sizes are larger than what you would typically get in central Fort Walton.” Prices start as low as $350,000 for a three-bedroom home, but Gauthier says such a home might need $150,000 in renovations to compare to other homes in the neighborhood. A move-in ready residence, meanwhile, can range from $500,000 to $650,000. Homes on the fairway can range from $550,000 to $700,000, while waterfront properties typically fetch anywhere from $1 million to $2 million.

Hit the links at Shalimar Pointe Golf Club

The neighborhood is anchored by Shalimar Pointe Golf Club, a community institution since 1968. The 18-hole course underwent a $1.7 million renovation project including re-grassing the entire course and a new irrigation system. The course re-opened in June 2023 after closing for more than a year. The neighborhood hugs Choctawhatchee Bay, which spans 129 square miles. “The bay is more designed for boating and skiing. You always see dolphins in the bay,” Gauthier says. “There’s a little sandbar called Crab Island closer to the Destin bridge. Locals and tourists all hang out there, especially in (the summer). It’s just full of people having fun.” The neighborhood's proximity to the bay means residents can enjoy firework displays over the water put on by the cities of Destin and Fort Walton Beach during holidays like the Fourth of July. Lake Lorraine Estates is also roughly 16 miles from the sugar-soft white sand beaches of the Emerald Coast.

Highly rated schools in the Okaloosa County School District

Kids can attend Shalimar Elementary School before heading to Clifford Meigs Middle School, both of which receive a B-plus from Niche. Choctawhatchee High School receives an A-minus and is the only school in the Okaloosa County School District that offers the International Baccalaureate program, a rigorous college prep program. According to its website, the high school gets its name from the Creek Indian word for “coming together” and many of the school’s rich traditions are inspired by the area’s Native American roots. For example, at the beginning of every home football game, a student dressed as the school’s mascot rides a horse across the turf and throws a spear midfield.

Classic Greek eats at Aegean Restaurant

Restaurants and services are located along Eglin Parkway, which is about 2 miles west of the neighborhood. Groceries are available at Publix in Ocean City about 3 miles away. “This area is mostly military, and so we do have a lot of international grocery stores, like locally owned Korean, Vietnamese and Mexican grocery stores,” Gauthier adds. Retail shopping is nearby at Target and Big Lots. Residents can start their day with a quick stop at Deb’s Coffee Drive-Thru in nearby Shalimar for espresso drinks and signature lattes named after customer creations. While there are numerous fast food and fast casual chains in the area, there are some locally owned eateries and regional franchises. Aegean is known for its authentic Greek food like souvlaki and moussaka. Twisted Grape Wine Bar and Café is a laid-back spot for charcuterie boards, small plates and sandwiches. Boaters can also cruise to several waterfront restaurants along Choctawhatchee Bay. “Once or twice a year, some boating clubs get together and hold a poker run where all these boaters will get together and they’ll travel from restaurant to restaurant to get poker cards,” Gauthier says. “And at the end of the run, they see who has the best hand.”

Eglin Parkway is a major thoroughfare for the area that connects to Eglin AFB, Ocean City and Fort Walton Beach. The neighborhood is less than 13 miles from Destin and the soft white sands of the Emerald Coast.

Environmental factors

Environmental factors such as hurricanes, tropical storms and flooding are a risk for the area. In older neighborhoods like Lake Lorraine Estates, homeowners might find that insurance companies charge more for insurance. “Insurance companies like newer homes because new homes have to be up to Florida’s building code,” McAdoo says.
