Eidson Road is a border-town community with growth on the horizon
Mesquite and palm trees line the streets of Eidson Road, a close-knit, mostly residential, Hispanic community of roughly 9,500 on the south side of Eagle Pass. Residents here are within walking distance of the Camino Real International Bridge, one of two international bridges in the city. The community, named for its main thoroughfare, has come a long way, says Francisco Mauricio, Realtor with La Cantera Real Estate. “I grew up in Eidson Road. I’ve seen pictures of me as a baby, and the road was actually just a dirt path then,” he says. “Now it’s paved. It’s busy. There are homes, businesses and food stands.”
Expansion of the Camino Real International Bridge – from six lanes to 12 – is set to take place in 2028. And the construction of a third, privately owned bridge was approved in 2024. Mauricio says this will lead to more growth for the neighborhood. “We’re talking maybe 5 years or more, but it’s going to grow rapidly,” he says. “The city wants to add a big commercial boulevard once everything is open.”
Major employers, shopping and dining within a 5-mile drive
Healthcare is the leading industry in Eidson Road, and a major employer – Fort Duncan Regional Medical Center – is just 5 miles away. Retail trade is the community’s second-biggest industry, thanks to the steadily growing commercial presence along Bibb Avenue, featuring major employers like H-E-B and Lowe’s. Chain restaurants ranging from Fuddruckers to Popeyes line the strip as well. Eateries serving authentic Mexican cuisine, Texan barbecue and more have storefronts in the plazas along Bibb Avenue and downtown.
Tried-and-true midcentury ranches meet a wave of new construction homes
The median price in Eidson Road is about $260,000, roughly $160,000 less than the national median. Aside from a rapidly increasing number of new construction houses with sleek and blocky contemporary designs, the community mostly features a mix of older ranch-style and manufactured homes. Many were built between the ‘70s and ‘90s. Lots typically measure between a quarter and a half of an acre. “Families have been there a long time now. Neighbors know each other’s names.”
Softball and baseball leagues are popular among local kids and parents
While a couple of pocket parks and neighborhood playgrounds are throughout the community, the Nick Carr Sports Complex is Eidson Road’s largest recreational space. It features a soccer field and two ballfields, including the Alex Alvarez Softball Field. “Baseball and softball are really popular here. Parents go all out for the kids, and the high school teams are getting closer and closer to state champs,” Mauricio says.
A longstanding rivalry between the Mavericks and the Eagles
The Eagle Pass Independent School District earns a B-minus on Niche, as does Eidson Road’s local high school, C.C. Winn High. The high school is home to the Mavericks, whose rivalry with the Eagle Pass High Eagles has spanned almost two decades. “It’s pretty competitive. The kind of rivalry where they paint the mascots and tee-pee the statue in front of the school. I mean, it’s Texas. Football is life here.”
Getting in and out of Eidson Road
Texas 480 Loop runs along the outskirts of Eidson Road. El Indio Highway connects to many residential streets, making it the main way to get in and out. Public transportation is limited to the local Greyhound station and two fixed Southwest Area Regional Transit bus routes. Maverick County International Airport is about 15 miles north. San Antonio is the closest metro, around 150 miles away.
