Durazno is a hot dining destination in El Paso
Durazno is one of the oldest neighborhoods in El Paso. While it was originally a residential area with plenty of Adobe and stucco houses, Durazno saw many changes after Interstate 10 was built north of the neighborhood in the 1960s. While the community has seen more noise and foot traffic from the highway, Durazno has also seen new developments including local parks, schools and shops, not to mention a variety of restaurants that cater to an active nightlife. “That local restaurant scene is reviving the area,” says Victor Vazquez, a Realty One Group broker associate and 30-year resident. “That’s what this neighborhood is basically set up for right now.”
Breweries, food trucks and Mexican markets
Durazno’s dining is primarily anchored by two local breweries that welcome large weekend crowds. Deadbeach Brewery is the longest-running craft brewery in El Paso and has been pouring over 350 taps since 2015. The Old Sheepdog Brewery takes up a block on Rosa Avenue and hosts food trucks, open mic nights and shopping events for local artists. Many more cafes and Mexican restaurants can be found south by Alameda Avenue, as well as many smaller markets and grocery stores that offer baked goods such as pan dulce and francesitos. Local retail also consists of thrift shops, suppliers and home goods stores.
From Interstate 10 to New Mexico
Interstate 10 runs 3 miles west into downtown El Paso and 22 miles north to New Mexico. The Union Depot has an Amtrak line that runs east through the community and connects over 230 miles into Alpine. Sun Metro bus stops posted along Alameda Avenue connect Central El Paso to Mission Valley 8 miles southeast and the El Paso International Airport 5 miles northeast. The area is also pedestrian-friendly, with plenty of crosswalks and sidewalks between local businesses and storefronts.
Chicano art, parks and the El Paso Zoo and Botanical Gardens
Local events are held at the east end in Lincoln Park, which features a Chicano art trail, bike lanes and murals preserved underneath the highway. Saipan-Ledo Park is half a mile east and has an 8-acre sports field for youth football and soccer games. Washington Park has a basketball court and baseball field, while over 200 animals live directly south in the 35-acre El Paso Zoo and Botanical Gardens.
Mixed-use houses along Durazno Avenue
Most single-family homes and fixer-uppers in Durazno were built in the 1950s, with prices ranging between $125,000 and $300,000. Although there are more homes than apartments, there are also more renters in this community, with most owners choosing to open up their properties to another tenant. “You’ve got a lot of old homes that are being converted for commercial use like my property,” Vazquez says. “It was actually used as a duplex when it was built, so I use one side as an office, and I rent out the other side for a canopy business that uses the backyard as their workshop. I have a small two-bedroom house next door that can also go either way.”
El Paso ISD and Texas Tech Health
Not only is Durazno zoned for El Paso ISD, but it’s also home to Texas Tech Health El Paso, which runs four schools focusing on nursing, medicine, dental hygiene and biomedical sciences. “Texas Tech Medical School has been seeing more students coming into that area to see if the location might work for them while they’re attending school,” Vazquez says. For local K-12 students, school starts at Zavala Elementary, which has a 12-to-1 student-teacher ratio and a C-plus on Niche. Guillen Middle School rewards students for good behavior through its Grizzly Coins program and earned a C. Jefferson High School has a 70% graduation rate and also earned a C. The El Paso Children’s Hospital is directly north of the high school and is open for 24 hours.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
