Durazno is a hot dining destination in El Paso
Durazno is one of the oldest neighborhoods in El Paso. While it was originally a residential area with plenty of Adobe and stucco houses, Durazno saw many changes after Interstate 10 was built north of the neighborhood in the 1960s. Although the community experiences more noise and foot traffic from the highway, Durazno has also seen new developments including local parks, schools and shops, not to mention a variety of restaurants that cater to an active nightlife. “That local restaurant scene is reviving the area,” says Victor Vazquez, a Realty One Group broker associate and 30-year resident. “That’s what this neighborhood is basically set up for right now.”

Breweries, food trucks and Mexican markets
Durazno’s dining is primarily anchored by two local breweries that welcome large weekend crowds. DeadBeach Brewery is the longest-running craft brewery in El Paso and has been pouring its signature beers since 2015. The Old Sheepdog Brewery is located along Rosa Avenue and hosts food trucks, open mic nights and shopping events for local artists. Many more cafes and Mexican restaurants can be found south by Alameda Avenue, as well as many grocery stores like Food City Supermarket, Big Savers Market and El Paso Produce. Local retail also consists of thrift shops, suppliers and home goods stores.

Mixed-use houses along Durazno Avenue
Most single-family homes and fixer-uppers in Durazno were built in the 1950s, with prices ranging between $125,000 and $300,000. Although there are more homes than apartments, there are also more renters in this community, with most owners choosing to open up their properties to another tenant. “You’ve got a lot of old homes that are being converted for commercial use like my property,” Vazquez says. “It was actually used as a duplex when it was built, so I use one side as an office, and I rent out the other side for a canopy business that uses the backyard as their workshop. I have a small two-bedroom house next door that can also go either way.”
