Lords Park takes its name from the historic park within its boundaries
In the 1890s, the Lords family of Elgin established Lords Park, a sprawling park with trails, places for the community to gather, a zoo and fields for recreation. As the Park's popularity grew, so did the desire to live nearby, and Lords Park neighborhood was created. Houses date back to the 1800s, and "the neighborhood is similar to a lot of our more historic neighborhoods in Elgin," says Paun Bednar, Realtor at Real People Realty, who specializes in historic and vintage homes. "It's not a historic district itself, but it very well could be." While the homes have vintage quirks and charm, "The biggest attraction to the neighborhood is the park itself," Bednar says. In the nearly 150 years since their inception, the park and neighborhood have expanded, grown and changed. Still, the initial draws for homebuyers remain: natural surroundings and prominent architecture.
The park has outlets for recreation, events and exploring the area's history
Living in Lords Park means living a short walk from one of Elgin's most robust parks, with over 100 acres of woods, sports amenities, walking trails and buildings. Elgin National Little League plays at the nine baseball and softball diamonds at the park's northern end, and other athletic fields and courts are along the rest of the park's walking trails. The park's unique elements, however, make it stand out from the other green spaces of the city. Weddings and other events occur at Lords Park Pavilion, the region's natural history is on display at the Elgin Public Museum and some houses are across the street from a zoo. "The zoo used to have a bear and a lion. The number of animals has dwindled, but we still have buffalo, elk and deer," Bednar says. "The lagoons were very important to the area in the past and held regional ice-skating competitions when they froze over," he says. Lords Park Family Aquatic Center features water slides and a kid-friendly shallow section with splash features.

Architecturally unique houses from more than a century of development
The neighborhood has a wide range of styles from over a century of development and a range of prices to match. "The homes are all unique," Bednar says. "Most of them are well-maintained and nicely kept with great architectural features." The smallest homes, like cottages, ranch-style homes and Cape Cods, range from $170,000 to $250,000. Colonial Revivals, Queen Anne Victorians, American Foursquares and bungalows sell between $250,000 and $450,000. "The most recent home I sold in the area was a Victorian with a tall turret and at least eight different exterior paint colors," Bednar says. "There's a lot of preservation going on in the area." Yards are around one-fifth acre and commonly have detached garages, privacy fences, pools and seating areas. With a median price nearly $100,000 less than the national median, houses sell quickly – usually only three weeks after listing.
