Elgin is a safe Oklahoma city known for its military jobs and schools
The small southwest Oklahoma city of Elgin is, located 15 miles north of Lawton, is a community of about 3,600 defined by its proximity to Fort Sill, the largest field artillery training center in the world and the largest employer in Comanche County. Elgin’s own BAE Systems facility, which assembles M109-52 Howitzers, works closely with the base. In addition to economic stability, Elgin is known for two things: education and a safe environment. Military presence makes for an active housing market
The strong military presence provides a stable, yet active housing market. “People who buy here are primarily military,” says Julie Bridges, a longtime resident who works for RE/MAX Professionals. “They’re here usually 2-3 years, and then they either sell or rent.” Contemporary homes, many of which are newly built, stand out among the housing options. These homes typically come with driveways and attached garages. Most of the newest and most expensive are concentrated in subdivision settings away from the center of town. Prices typically range from around $120,000 to nearly $400,000. Many of the community’s homes are built with brick, which helps mitigate utility costs. Residents can expect hot, humid summers and windy winters. Oklahoma is prone to tornadoes. However, the last major one to hit Lawton came in 1979.

Top-rated district's special needs department is a draw
The Elgin Public School District, which earns an A-minus from Niche, is known for its special needs department. “That’s a draw to Elgin, because we take care of our special needs students,” Bridges says. The district comprises four schools conveniently located in the heart of the community. Elgin Elementary and Elgin Middle schools are rated A-minus, while Elgin High School is rated B-plus. Elgin Elementary is graded as a single institution, but it is formally split into two schools: Elgin Lower Elementary, which serves students in pre-kindergarten through first grade and Elgin Upper Elementary, which serves students in second through fourth grades. Elgin High School’s Melissa Evon was recently named 2025 Oklahoma Teacher of the Year. The family and consumer sciences teacher began her career in the Elgin district in 1992. Oklahoma offers the opportunity to transfer out of district, but acceptance is dependent upon the receiving district and can be affected by several factors, including enrollment limits.

It’s a big deal,” Bridges says.
