Camden
Construction from 1950 to today, Traditional styles
Camden homes favor Traditional styles, often with Cape Cod or Colonial Revival design details such as dormer windows, columns and broad front porches. “There are a lot of vinyl-sided ranch-style homes and two-story Traditional-Contemporary homes, too, that’s what’s selling these days,” says Old. Prices start at around $300,000 and can go up to more than $575,000. “Camden is still growing, so you can still get a new construction for a decent price at the moment,” says Botterbush. Old agrees, adding that the county is working to curtail the residential construction boom. “They’re trying to control the growth by putting a moratorium on new subdivisions. All that’s doing, though, is driving the prices up. Demand for housing is high, but in the county’s mind, the infrastructure to support it isn’t there. Their main concern is making sure there’s plenty of county water to meet the demand.”Highly rated Camden County Public Schools
Grandy Primary School, which serves Camden kids between preschool and third grade, earns an A grade from Niche. Camden Intermediate School, which houses fourth through sixth grades, earns an A-minus. Seventh and eighth graders go to Camden Middle, which gets a B. There are currently two high schools in the district: Camden County High and Camden Early College High. Camden County gets a B-minus from Niche while Camden Early College gets a B-plus. Camden students can participate in the Camden County United States Coast Guard JROTC (Camden County CG JROTC) program. In 2024, three Camden County CG JROTC cadets were appointed to the Coast Guard Academy’s class of 2028. Plans are in place to combine the two high schools into a single building; the new building is expected to open ahead of the 2026-2027 school year.Community park, library and boat access
On the northwest side of the neighborhood, Camden Community Park offers myriad ways to enjoy the great outdoors, from a playground and athletic fields to walking trails and a disc golf course. The Camden County Public Library is less than a mile down the road, across from the Camden County Courthouse. Visitors can browse the books or take advantage of the library’s free events, such as the Summer Children’s Storytimes series or the Cooking Up Confidence kids’ cooking workshop series. Old observes that there are ample opportunities to get out on the waterfront around here, too. Lamb’s Marina, on the Pasquotank River near the southwest side of Camden, has 60 boat slips that can accommodate watercraft between 28 and 65 feet long. Upriver, close to Camden Community Park, Sawyers Creek Boat Access is a public boat ramp complete with parking.Country stores close to home; Elizabeth City big-box options not far
Locals can pick up everyday essentials at Family Dollar or Dollar General, both of which are close to home, off US Route 158. There’s a smattering of eateries spaced along the central thoroughfare, too, including Hardee’s and Hungry Panda Chinese. The newly opened Jack & Jenny Pizza Co. is quickly becoming a local favorite for pizza by the slice. Half a mile down Highway 158, Topside Catering & Deli is popular for seafood and Southern fare. Nearby, Old 34 Grill is the neighborhood greasy spoon. The Vintage Lilley, not much farther down the road, features antiques, home décor and more from indoor flea market-style stalls. Both Old and Botterbush note that most Camden residents head into Elizabeth City for major shopping trips. There’s a Food Lion in the bigger city about 6 miles west of home, close to Lowe’s, Harbor Freight Tools and Belk.Commuting to Elizabeth City or Chesapeake
US Route 158 runs east-west through the center of Camden. The nearly 6-mile drive west into Elizabeth City takes about 10 minutes via the main thoroughfare. Locals can take North Carolina Highway 343 north to US Route 17, which connects to Virginia. Chesapeake is about 38 miles that direction, a drive that can take around 45 minutes, depending on traffic. Old says most Camden residents commute to Elizabeth City or Virginia for work. “Most of the high-paying jobs are in the Tidewater area of Virginia,” he says. Kitty Hawk, in North Carolina’s Outer Banks, is less than 45 miles east of Camden. “It’s about an hour away,” says Botterbush. “People go there to vacation. I don’t know that they’d move to Camden specifically for access to the Outer Banks, but it is a nice perk.”
