An established neighborhood next to ECSU

Situated adjacent to Elizabeth City State University, Edgewood is a peaceful oasis from the collegiate bustle right next door. Rows of mature trees separate the residential streets from academic buildings and bustling thoroughfares, lending the area a quiet feel. This established neighborhood’s roots go back to the 1950s, and its character captures the heart of the Harbor of Hospitality. “People are very friendly,” says Alex Thorne, a Realtor with the Rhonda Twiddy Team. “They’ll say hi to you, they’ll hold the door, and as you’re driving down the road, everybody waves. It’s such a shift if you’re coming from a big city area to here, where you feel like part of the community.” Though Edgewood isn’t among Elizabeth City’s riverfront communities, this inland neighborhood is just a couple miles from the waterfront Downtown, and with suburban conveniences even closer.

Ranch-style homes from the mid-20th century

Residential streets branch off of Edgewood Drive, the main road through the neighborhood connecting Parkview Drive and Weeksville Road. These wide, flat streets are flanked by neatly trimmed lawns buffered by mature trees, which provide a layer of separation between houses and the nearby Elizabeth City State University campus. Most homes here were built between the 1950s and ‘60s and are brick or vinyl ranch-style houses. Lots are typically one-third acre, and while not all homes have attached garages, plenty of long driveways or carports. Prices start at around $140,000 for a three-bedroom home and can climb to $425,000 for a newly renovated five-bedroom house.

A university next door adds a youthful flair

Elizabeth City State University is a historically Black university within the public University of North Carolina system. It enrolls about 2,000 undergraduate students and is well-known for its aviation sciences program, which offers hands-on experience through the Elizabeth City Regional Airport. “Aviation is a huge part of our economy and history. In fact, the Wright brothers left here to go to the Outer Banks for their first flight, which is a fun claim to fame,” says Rhonda Twiddy, the team lead of the Rhonda Twiddy Team. Thorne echoes her, adding, “Elizabeth City State University’s aviation program is massive and still expanding.” Edgewood residents unaffiliated with the university can still take advantage of its nearby amenities, whether that means catching an astronomy show at the Khan Planetarium or watching the Vikings play Division II football at Roebuck Stadium.

Just north of the neighborhood’s residential streets is Edgewood Shopping Center, a strip mall that serves as office space for organizations such as the Albemarle Alliance for Children & Families and the American Red Cross. To the south, Edgewood is right across the street from Weeksville Crossing, where a Food Lion is situated for quick grocery runs. Also within the shopping center is China Garden, a casual counter-service eatery and a convenient place for takeout on busy weeknights.
