East Side
Crusing the currents at Wilbur Dam
Billy Bob Garrison Field sits directly northwest of the community, offering a place to practice swings atop its pair of baseball diamonds while children climb about the playground at the neighboring Cat Island Park. 5-miles east sits Wilbur Dam, a busy spot for picnics and fishing for trout in the Wilbur River. Nearby is the Wilbur Dam Put-In on the Watauga River side, where kayakers and tubers drop in and ride the dam’s current down to Elizabethton.Hilly streets and 20th century ranch-style homes
Most residents use Siam Road when navigating in and out of the community. The hilly mainline comprises both East Side Baptist Church and East Side Christian Church, as well as residential streets that break off from either side. Lining these quiet streets are ranch-style homes built throughout the 20th century. Reminiscent of the era are occasional attached carports and enduring concrete steps and pathways connecting the street to front doors. Though these homes present varying exterior finishes, from red brick to white vinyl siding, commonalities include unfenced backyards and views of the surrounding mountains. Prices range from $80,000 for a home in need of repair to $385,000 for a larger, recently remodeled home.Exploring local businesses along East Elk Avenue
The local shops of downtown Elizabethton, situated 2 miles northwest, line East Elk Avenue. A walk down the half-mile stretch can include stops at antique stores like Duck Crossing Antique Mall, buying and renting outdoor gear from Hellbender Outfitters or picking up gifts from Simple Blessings General Store. Also sharing the space are a handful of locally owned restaurants, Like Jiggy Ray’s Downtown Pizzeria and Dino’s Restaurant. “Dino’s has been here since the late 1950s, and a lot of locals like to go there.” Sitting three blocks east of the Italian eatery are the ciders and craft beer of Riverside Taphouse, known for its comfortable atmosphere. For daily essentials, Food City on Broad Street is a mile northwest of the community, while a Walmart Supercenter off Over Mountain Drive is a 3-mile trip west for any retail needs.Fundraising in downtown Elizabethton
From May through October, downtown Elizabethton hosts the Carter County Car Club Cruise-In every Saturday afternoon. Those participating get to show off their shiny rides and raise funds for local children’s charities. “People from all over the region, even North Carolina and Virginia will come in and make downtown active,” Street says. Other annual city-wide events include Barktoberfest, a pup-themed celebration in October at Elizabethton Covered Bridge, and the Elizabethton Christmas Parade, held downtown in early December.Post-graduate pathways at Elizabethton High School
At summer’s end, young students will head to East Side Elementary School, which maintains a B rating on Niche. Meanwhile, older students will enroll at T.A. Dugger Junior High School, which holds an A-minus rating, before heading to B-rated Elizabethton High School. The high school offers Tennessee’s Career and Technical Education Programs, which prepare students for post-graduate careers through pathways including Aviation Flight, Diagnostic Services and several others.Commuting along Highway 67 and U.S. Routwe 19
Highway 67, which borders the neighborhood's western side, connects commuters to Johnson City 11 miles southwest. Those traveling from the area can hop on U.S. Route 19 directly northwest to reach flights at Tri-Cities Airport 26 miles in the same direction. The throughway also allows for 21-mile drives north to Bristol with the help of U.S. Route 11. Meanwhile, medical care at Sycamore Shoals Hospital is closer to home, 3 miles northwest, off West Elk Avenue.
