Little Beckham County city with a big-name highway and a big heart

Volunteering is big in Elk City, whether it’s coaching youth sports or cooking and distributing meals to the needy. This Beckham County city of about 12,000 is friendly, too, says Janessa Bustin, a lifelong resident and an administrative assistant with the city. “You wave at people driving down the road even if you don’t know them,” she says. While it’s a bit isolated – just over 100 miles from Oklahoma City – she says it has everything locals need. The downtown is growing, schools are solid, and there are many family friendly activities year-round. Elk City is also home to a portion of Historic Route 66, which draws a steady stream of out-of-towners traveling the famed roadway.

Other medical and dental centers are scattered throughout the city. Elk City’s Carnegie Library, established in 1912, offers resources for adults, teens, children and babies. The National Route 66 Museum isn’t necessarily a go-to for locals, but its focus on the historic roadway draws out-of-towners. “The people who want to travel the old Route 66 always stop at our museum,” Bustin says.
