Early 20th century homes convenient to modern Elkhart amenities
Bower is a residential neighborhood of early 20th century houses, but these historic homes are closely connected to modern conveniences. Bower is within 2 miles of Elkhart’s top parks, events and attractions, as well as employment opportunities in a nearby industrial area or Elkhart General Hospital. “People here range from first-time homeowners to lifelong residents,” says Lucinda Lowe, Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway Home Services. “This area is very close to antique malls, locally owned restaurants, McNaughton Park and downtown Elkhart.”
Bower features a number of larger arts and crafts homes from the early 20th century.
Bower is made up of mostly smaller lots with smaller single family homes.

Close to McNaughton Park and Saint Joseph River recreation
Set alongside a bend in the Saint Joseph River, McNaughton Park is about 1.5 miles south of the neighborhood and is one of Elkhart’s most popular recreational areas. In addition to its plentiful green space, the park features a boat launch, accessible playground, splash park, tennis courts, softball field, and indoor pavilion. Elkhart Parks and Recreation superintendent Jamison Czarnecki says the park will be further enhanced with a riverside trail that’s planned in the district’s recently released Five-Year Plan. Weston Park is a small neighborhood park in Bower with a playground, soccer pitch and picnic area. The neighborhood is also about a mile from Wellfield Botanic Gardens. One of Elkhart’s top attractions, Wellfield is open year-round and has 20 distinct gardens on display.

Antique shops add to historic vibes
Antique and vintage shops lean into the historic nature of the neighborhood, repurposing former industrial spaces into welcoming spaces for their resale collections. There are four such stores on or near West Beardsley Avenue, which forms Bower’s northern boundary. Sweet Cone’s colorful pink and baby blue exterior presents an inviting atmosphere for the ice cream and taco stand. Several kinds of brew are available just north of Beardsley Avenue, from beers at Westwind Brewery and Cappy’s Northside Bar and Grill to the morning variety served at Steelyard Coffee. A Kroger at the corner of East Beardsley and Johnson Street is the closest supermarket. Beardsley Market is a neighborhood convenience store.

Events embrace Elkhart's musical legacy
Among other things, Elkhart is known for being a major manufacturer of band instruments. Naturally, that makes live music part of the city’s culture. The Elkhart Municipal Band performs free concerts every Tuesday night throughout the summer at McNaughton Park’s Arthur Singleton Band Shell. There is also a monthly summer concert series at the band shell featuring musicians across a range of genres. Elkhart's largest annual event, the Elkhart Jazz Festival, is held less than 2 miles away in downtown Elkhart each July. Bruce Hornsby, Keb’ Mo, Gregory Porter and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band are among the artists to headline the festival in recent years.
A diverse set of early 20th century architectural styles
Most homes in Bower were built in the first three decades of the 20th century – a time when little thought was given to building houses in a cookie-cutter fashion. “The diverse architectural style ranges from Bungalow and Beaux Arts to Prairie School,” Lowe says. There are also pockets of ranch-style houses that were built in the 1950s and ‘60s as Elkhart’s population continued to grow. No matter the style, most neighborhood lots have one or more mature trees. Due to the age of the neighborhood, not every house has a driveway, but the streets are wide enough to accommodate street parking. Recent sales in Bower range between $90,000 and $220,000.

West Beardsley Avenue industry brings truck traffic
Sidewalks line Bower’s gridded streets, making this a pedestrian-friendly neighborhood. Shopping and dining options along West Beardsley Avenue are walkable, but Bower is primarily car-dependent to the rest of Elkhart. Beardsley Avenue experiences heavy truck traffic thanks to an industrial sector that includes Elkhart Brass Company, which is a top national manufacturer of firefighting equipment. Mixer trucks are another common sight. West Beardsley Avenue terminates in a concrete yard less than a mile west of the neighborhood.
