Appealing streetscapes near an Elkhart landmark

Elkhart residents who don’t live in Hayden might recognize the neighborhood as the westside home of one of the city’s three signature water towers. Those who do live in the neighborhood know Hayden for much more -- most notable, the family-friendly convenience provided by two schools and neighborhood namesake Hayden Park. “You’ll find a mix of bungalows and prairie-style homes alongside two-story residences, creating a visually appealing streetscape,” says Lucinda Lowe, Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway Home Services. “Tree-lined sidewalks invite leisurely walks, enhancing the community’s walkability.”

Smaller houses with ideal location

Most Hayden houses are one-story structures, whether ranch-style or bungalows, though a handful of split-level and two-story homes are sprinkled throughout the neighborhood. Neighborhood homes are an average of 1,400 square feet, which is around 500 feet below the national average. However, these houses are built near a pair of key walkable assets — Mary Daly Elementary School and Hayden Park. Recent sales in Hayden range from $100,000 to $215,000.

Hayden Park perfect for a picnic

In addition to being the home of the water tower, Hayden Park is the neighborhood’s signature feature. “It has a spacious green lawn and a charming gazebo – perfect for a picnic,” Lowe says. More amenities are available at McNaughton Park, which is about 1.5 miles southeast of Hayden. McNaughton Park features a boat launch, accessible playground, splash park, tennis courts, softball field, and indoor pavilion.

Events highlight Elkhart's musical legacy

Elkhart’s legacy as a top manufacturer of brass instruments is on prominent display. Throughout the summer, the Elkhart Municipal Band performs free concerts each Tuesday night at the nearby McNaughton Park band shell. There is also a monthly summer concert series at the band shell featuring musicians across a range of genres. Downtown, the Elkhart Jazz Festival draws nationally renowned artists to town each July.

Nappanee Street Bridge connects to south side

Nappanee Street Bridge crosses the nearby Saint Joseph River, connecting Hayden to Elkhart’s south side. Public transportation is available here with both the Interurban Trolley Green and Yellow Lines stopping in the neighborhood. Hayden is also convenient to Elkhart General Hospital, which is just a mile outside the neighborhood.

Trucks rumble through Hayden streets

Living in Hayden means preparing to see large trucks. Recycling trucks filter in and out of the recycling center in the northern half of the neighborhood. There is also a concrete yard at the corner of Nappanee Street and Beardsley Avenue, so mixer trucks also roll past the neighborhood throughout the week.
