A riverfront neighborhood with direct access to Elkhart's north side
Fitting snugly onto a Lower Saint Joseph River peninsula, South Shore-Bridge Street is a primarily residential neighborhood on Elkhart’s south side. Thanks to Bridge Street’s direct access to the north side of the river, Berkshire Hathaway Home Services Realtor Lucinda Lowe says the neighborhood “perfectly balances tranquility and accessibility.” Elkhart General Hospital is directly across the river, making South Shore-Bridge Street ideally situated for hospital workers. The neighborhood is also less than 2 miles from Elkhart's vibrant downtown district, which is also on the south side of the river.

A mix of fixer-uppers and turnkey homes near the Lower Saint Joe
The river is prominent in South Shore-Bridge Street, where many homes have direct access and views. Though several houses on South Shore Street have docks or boat launches, they're less frequently found here than they are in riverside neighborhoods along the Upper Saint Joseph, which is considered the more navigable part of the river. "Here, charming cottage-style houses mingle with inviting two-story houses, many of which are situated along the picturesque shore of the Lower Saint Joseph,” Lowe explains. A wide collection of housing styles from the early- to mid-20th century are found in the neighborhood, including American Foursquares, bungalows and many more. Due to the age of most of the homes, a number of fixer-uppers are available, typically selling between $55,000 and $90,000. Turnkey houses can start around $110,000 and sell for up to $235,000.

McNaughton Park is right across the river
McNaughton Park, one of Elkhart’s busiest outside spaces, is directly across the bridge from the neighborhood. In addition to ample green space, the park has a boat launch, accessible playground, splash park, tennis courts, softball field and indoor pavilion. Improvements are also in the works – Elkhart Parks and Recreation Director Jamison Czarnecki says a walking path along the river and pickleball courts are part of the district’s Five-Year Plan. But residents don’t even need to make the short trip across the bridge for recreation. The neighborhood's Nadel Avenue Playground, located on a former residential lot, features a colorful, tot-friendly playground, swing set and basketball court.
Elkhart locals enjoy the views at McNaughton Park on the shores of the St Joseph River.

Halfway between downtown and Nappanee Street shopping districts
Commercial buildings are limited in South Shore-Bridge Street, but the neighborhood is about halfway between major commercial areas to the east and west. Several fast-food restaurants are located along Nappanee Street, but so are some local favorites like Bruno’s Pizza and Jade Garden Chinese Restaurant. Groceries are available at Save-A-Lot. Residents are just a few blocks from longtime Elkhart staple Michael’s Italian Restaurant, and dozens more dining options are available downtown. Martin’s Super Market is the closest grocery store in this part of town.
South Shore-Bridge Street locals can visit Michael's Italian Restaurant for great Italian.

Events toot the city's musical horn
Elkhart pays homage to the city’s history of manufacturing band instruments with several events, including the annual Elkhart Jazz Fest, held each summer and bringing acclaimed artists such as Keb’ Mo’ and Bruce Hornsby to town. The Elkhart Municipal Band performs free concerts every Tuesday night throughout the summer at McNaughton Park’s Arthur Singleton Band Shell. The Elkhart Grand Prix, a Formula 1-style road race involving go-karts, shuts down the streets in downtown Elkhart on the first weekend of August.
Riverside living carries flood risk
Proximity to the river carries a risk of flooding, though it is partially mitigated by a series of locks and dams that control the Saint Joseph River's flow from southern Michigan through northern Indiana. According to the US Geological Survey, Elkhart has not experienced a major or moderate flood since March 1982. However, minor flooding is a regular late-winter and early-spring occurrence due to snow melt.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
