A neighborhood where the spirit matches the name
The Strong neighborhood is not one of Elkhart’s bigger neighborhoods in size — it’s slightly less than 2 square miles — but its collection of century-old houses and convenient location make it one of the hottest neighborhoods in the city’s housing market. Strong is about a mile west of downtown, which is just across the Lower St. Joseph River. “Strong is a vibrant neighborhood that beautifully blends the charm of history with the energy of modern life,” says Lucinda Lowe, a Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway Home Services. "This neighborhood isn't just a place to live; it's a vibrant lifestyle."

Lexington Avenue Bridge leads to downtown shopping and dining
Lexington Avenue Bridge leads from Strong into Downtown Elkhart, where dozens of shopping and dining options await. Iechyd Da Brewing Company, Brass Elk Brewing and Electric Brew Coffee Shop are among the downtown area’s most popular spots for food and a brew — whether beer or coffee. Nearby Michael’s Italian Restaurant has been an Elkhart mainstay since opening in 1959. On Strong’s side of the Saint Joseph, Simeri’s Beardsley Street Tavern and Cappy’s Northside Bar and Grill are popular with locals. Convenient to Elkhart's biggest annual events
In a city known for manufacturing musical instruments, live music is part of the culture. The Elkhart Jazz Festival brings top artists like Keb’ Mo, Bruce Hornsby and The Preservation Hall Jazz Band to Downtown Elkhart each June. Elkhart’s other main event, the Elkhart Grand Prix, draws on Indiana’s racing heritage. Like an F1 road race with go-karts, the event takes over the streets of Downtown in the first weekend of August. “I’m a transplant, and I’m always impressed by what is offered in Elkhart,” says Strong resident Michelle Hartwig. “There are a lot of festivals and events. Concerts. They are very much trying to make this a place that people want to live.”
Century-old homes sit along wide, tree-lined streets
Strong’s tree-lined streets are conducive to a friendly neighborhood setting — wide enough for bicyclists to have ample room to pedal, and with well-maintained sidewalks for pedestrians. Houses are an array of styles from the last decade of the 19th century and first three decades of the 20th century — Arts and Crafts, Craftsman, bungalows, Tudor Revivals and ranch-style homes are all among an eclectic mix. Recent sales in Strong range between $105,000 and $235,000, with the median price of around $189,000 below the Elkhart-area median of around $200,000.
