In Elkhart’s Woodlawn neighborhood, small businesses flank a relatively affordable suburban environment. People here can walk to several casual restaurants and area highlights such as the Hall of Heroes Superhero Museum. The neighborhood has an older stock of two- and three-bedroom homes, though each home has a yard and a driveway for a lower cost than the city median. People here also enjoy proximity to Christiana Creek, a well-loved spot for kayaking and floating down the river.

Shopping and dining from Windham Plaza to Shoppes on Six
Small businesses and local and chain restaurants line Cassopolis Street. El Fogon Restaurante y Taqueria has a colorfully decorated space where locals enjoy margaritas and Mexican street food. Down the street, El Nopal Taqueria is known for takeout quesabirrias, tacos and burritos. King Gyros Cassopolis St. serves Mediterranean staples as well as ribs, Italian beef sandwiches and Chicago-style hot dogs. Neighborhood businesses include Lowell’s Barber Shop, several auto parts stores and a CVS. On the same stretch, Windham Plaza is home to salons and Rise’n Roll Bakery, a beloved stop for donuts and other Amish-made sweets. Shoppers can head to Kroger a mile south or to the Shoppes on Six a mile north. This outdoor commercial hub hosts a Walmart, a Ross Dress for Less and other large chain stores.

Older Elkhart homes at more affordable rates
The neighborhood has homes from the 1930s with steep gabled roofs and a large share of Minimal Traditionals and ranch-style homes built in the 1950s and 60s. There are a small handful of split-levels, too. Woodlawn's homes usually have two or three bedrooms and sit on neatly trimmed plots that are the same size as their neighbors’. Narrow sidewalks connect homes here, often shaded beneath tall, mature trees. Prices range between $135,000 and $225,000, below Elkhart’s median sale price. This reflects the age of the housing stock, as buyers may need to invest in home upgrades before moving in.
Woodlawn features a variety of home styles from the early and mid 20th century.

A day on Christiana Creek or inside a museum
On warmer days, locals take advantage of Christiana Creek, which runs just west of Woodlawn. Kayaking, tubing and hiking riverside trails are popular pastimes here. Willowdale Park has the closest playground to the neighborhood, about a mile from most homes. The park has a baseball field, basketball court, fishing pond and indoor pavilion with a kitchen for gatherings.
For indoor entertainment, residents can bowl at Country Club Lanes or spend an afternoon at Hall of Heroes Superhero Museum. According to founder and director Allen Stewart, the museum holds the world’s largest collection of comic books and superhero-themed toys, games and art. “I started collecting as a kid, and it has taken 45 years to amass this collection,” Stewart says. Visitors can see Hollywood props and costumes such as the shield Chris Evans used in his first appearance as Captain America, the Hell Cycle from “Ghost Rider” and Adam West’s Batman costume. “We’re a two-fold time machine,” Stewart says. “We preserve these items and take you back in time to your childhood.”
