Northern Alabama farm community vibe
Less than 10 miles from the Alabama-Tennessee state line sits a rural Alabama community known as Elkmont, which began with a railroad depot in the mid-1800s and was named after the proliferation of elk that rambled throughout the local woods and farmland. Today, the train tracks are long gone, and the elk no longer roam. However, the area’s charming country vibe is still alive and well. “Elkmont puts you minutes away from major cities, but it still has that rural hometown feel,” says Blake Johnson, owner of the Blake Johnson Real Estate Group, who was born and raised in Limestone County. “It’s still a farming community, and agricultural communities tend to be close-knit.”
Homes on acreage
For folks seeking large lots and land, Elkmont is the place to be. Homes sit on generous lots ranging from a half-acre in a spacious subdivision to over 10 acres of wide-open farmland. Home styles vary from manufactured houses to brick ranch styles to grand modern farmhouses with interior sizes ranging from 1,100 to 4,000 square feet and list prices between $185,000 and $525,000. “You can get a lot of real estate for your money in the Elkmont area,” Johnson says. “Even though Limestone County is the fastest growing county in Alabama, you can still get a little more bang for your buck.”

Middle school and high school in one
Elkmont-area kids attend Limestone County Schools, including Elkmont Elementary, rated a B-minus by Niche, for pre-kindergarten through fifth grade. Next, students move to Elkmont High School for grades six through 12, which earns a C-plus rating and is an Advanced Education Accredited school. “My friends who have children who go to Elkmont schools say the schools have great educators,” Johnson says. “I’ve heard nothing but positive things about the educators.”
Artisan goat cheese and homestyle breakfasts
Elkmont’s history as an L & N Railroad stop is apparent from the red vintage caboose sitting next to the town's train depot-turned-community center. In addition to the caboose, Elkmont's quaint historic town center boasts some charming locally-owned shops, including Amy’s Antiques and the award-winning artisan goat cheese maker Belle Chevre. For everyday necessities, there’s a Piggly Wiggly grocery store about a mile down the road, and Momma D’s Restaurant, about 4 miles from Elkton’s center near Interstate 65, is popular for a hearty home-style breakfast.
Hiking trails and park playgrounds
For some outdoor time away from the farm, locals can enjoy a scenic hike on the Richard Martin Trail, which follows the path of the old railroad, running through Elkmont to nearby Athens, or spend an afternoon at Athens’ Swan Creek Park playing on the playground, hitting the ball around the tennis court or picnic under the shady pavilion. The Kids Dugout near the Athens Sportsplex and the public pool is another popular spot not far from Elkmont, where the kids can climb, balance and swing on the playground’s many wooden play structures. Before hitting the Swan Creek Nature Trail or heading back to Elkmont, visitors shouldn’t pass up the chance to walk across the charming Swan Creek Covered Bridge.

Small-town community festivals
In true small-town fashion, Elkmont offers many opportunities for folks around the area to get together and have fun throughout the year. The Elkmont Spring Festival and the Community Fest in fall feature live music, food trucks, activities for the kids, craft vendors and more; in December, Elkmont residents ring in the holidays with the annual Tinsel Trail Parade and Tree Lighting.
Easy access to other northern Alabama cities
With major area roadways, like Highway 127 and Interstate 65, less than 5 miles from Elkmont Town Hall, other parts of the northern Alabama area are easily accessible, including Athens, a 10-mile drive from Elkmont, and Huntsville, a farther commute of around 30 miles. Jetsetters en route to the Huntsville International Airport must journey about 35 miles to catch a flight. From hiking trails and down-home restaurants to community spirit and farmland for miles, Elkmont is the country life personified.
