An unincorporated Maryland community with a deep history

Despite being an unincorporated community, Elkridge counts itself as the oldest settlement in Howard County. Like many towns in central Maryland, this area of just over 25,000 has been defined throughout its history by its proximity to the Patapsco River. Once a center for iron production and the railroad industry, today’s residents view Elkridge in terms of its central location. “It’s right near Baltimore and not too far from Washington, D.C.,” says Shaun Holden, a broker with Renovation Real Estate with 11 years of experience in the area. “It’s next to Hanover, which is a big shopping destination. It’s also near Columbia and Ellicott City, but it’s not quite as well-known as they are.” Although it is often overshadowed by its neighbors, Elkridge offers homebuyers a suburban environment steeped in a rich history that predates the founding of the country.

Single-family homes sit on winding suburban streets

As of 2024, the median list price for single-family homes in Elkridge was around $515,000. “Because it’s by the county border, folks may find that it’s a bit less expensive than neighboring areas like Columbia and Ellicott City,” Holden says. “It’s also not a planned community like Columbia, so driving through it feels very different. It’s almost wilder visually, but because it's smaller you get the benefit of knowing your neighbors.” Winding residential streets lined with Colonial Revival and ranch-style homes end in cul-de-sacs, all surrounded by tall trees and framed by sidewalks. Townhouses, concentrated in communities like Montgomery Woods, can fetch prices between $300,000 and $450,000.

The largest shopping centers in the state are within arm's reach

Elkridge residents enjoy proximity to many of the area’s largest shopping destinations. “The convenience factor is difficult to overstate,” Holden says. “It’s right by Arundel Mills, but there’s also the Mall in Columbia, there’s Savage Mill and there’s Ellicott City, so people who live there have a lot of options.” Arundel Mills is Maryland’s largest mall, home to over 200 restaurants, retailers and the Live! Casino and Hotel. The Mall in Columbia, located about 10 miles from the city, also houses over 200 stores and eateries. Elkridge is regionally famous for the Elkridge Furnace Inn, an upscale restaurant in a historic iron forge on the banks of the Patapsco River.

Troy Park is a gathering point for youth athletes

Rockburn Branch Park, which traces the flow of a Patapsco River tributary, occupies the northern reaches of Elkridge. The park is home to over 7 miles of trails, several baseball diamonds and a disc golf course. Hikers can take to the 200 or so miles of trails at the Patapsco Valley State Park, while golfers will enjoy The Timbers at Troy, a public 18-hole course with a history dating back to 1664. Youth athletes can compete on one of the four multipurpose fields at Troy Park, which also features a playground and several miles of trails. In March of 2024, the county announced plans to add an indoor track facility to Troy Park’s list of amenities.

Interstate 95 for commutes between Baltimore and Washington, D.C.

Interstate 95 and Maryland Route 100 converge in the center of Elkridge, allowing for commutes to either Baltimore or Washington, D.C. “You also have the Baltimore Washington Parkway available, so there are plenty of ways to get around, even during rush hour,” Holden says. “And folks can take Maryland Route 32 down to Fort Meade if they work on base, which is appealing.” Howard County receives limited public transportation support from the Regional Transit Administration, with bus lines running from the Elkridge Corners Shopping Center to the Laurel Town Center.

Crime rates in Elkridge fall below the national average

Elkridge is part of Howard County and is served by the county police department, which reports that 73 percent of all crimes committed in Elkridge between 2022 and 2023 were crimes against property. According to the FBI Crime Data Explorer, violent crime rates throughout the county fell well below the national average in that same timeframe.

Elkridge is close to many of Maryland's favorite events and attractions

Elkridge sits just across the highway from Live! Casino and Hotel Maryland, which hosts concerts, stand-up and combat sporting events throughout the year. The casino is located next to Arundel Mills Mall, where people can catch a movie at the Cinemark Egyptian movie theater or the regular show at Medieval Times Dinner and Tournament. The city is also about 12 miles from Merriweather Post Pavilion, the state’s largest outdoor concert venue, and from downtown Baltimore, where locals gather for Ravens games at M&T Bank Stadium and Orioles baseball at Camden Yards.
