A central intersection connecting all of Ellenville
In the middle of Ellenville, Center Street and Main Street form a central intersection from which residents are able to reach just about anywhere in town. Aircraft take off from and land at the single-runway Joseph Y. Resnick Airport to the northeast, while anglers and boaters take to the waters of Rondout Reservoir about 10 miles northwest. Golfers hit the links at Shawangunk Country Club to the south, while forests and preserves’ greenery sprawls to the east across the Shawangunk Ridge. The intersection, paved under the watchful eye of the mountain slopes, is flanked by a pair of gas stations that send customers on the way to their next destination. Small stores, residential sectors and restaurants serving everything from American to international fare all branch out from the meeting of Center and Main, creating a hub for Ellenville locals. “Downtown Ellenville is a charming area with a mix of old and new architecture and great eateries,” says Alex Stier, a NYS licensed associate broker with Keller Williams Realty Hudson Valley North.
Expansive nature preserves east of Ellenville
Vast swaths of nature unfurl east of downtown Ellenville. “It offers stunning views of the Shawangunk Mountains and the foothills of the Catskills,” Stier says. “The Rondout Creek invites residents to kayak, canoe, swim and fish.” On and near Shawangunk Ridge, which rises sharply to a maximum elevation of just over 2,000 feet, sit miles of nature preserves and forests. Witch’s Hole State Forest spans nearly 500 acres, but Minnewaska State Park and Preserve is the primary gateway through which most of the protected lands are accessed. “It has stunning waterfalls and trails,” Stier says. “It’s a must-see.”
Outdoor enthusiasts go for hikes to such landmarks as the Gertrude’s Nose formation, the cliffs along Lake Minnewaska or the Rainbow Falls box canyon, where water cascades over multiple tiers of rock ledges on its way down. Sams Point Foot Trail is among the paths in the area and encircles Lake Maratanza, which sits more than 2,000 feet above sea level. Within Ellenville itself, golfers take swings at Shawangunk Country Club’s nine-hole course and anglers cast lines in Sandburg Creek. Berme Road Park has a trailhead leading into the Minnewaska, as well as a playground and sports facilities for basketball and softball.
Awosting Falls is one of the most easily accessible attractions at Minnewaska State Park.
Ellenville locals can play the 9-hole course at the Shawangunk Country Club.

Honoring the legacy of the Borscht Belt
Resorts in the Catskills, and the legacy they left on comedy, food and more from their popularity in the mid-20th century, are immortalized in the Borscht Belt Museum in downtown Ellenville. “The Borscht Belt was kind of like the movie ‘Dirty Dancing,” Stier says. “People would go for a long time during the summer. They’d usually come up from New York City, and then they’d have a comedian like Jerry Lewis play at one of the hotels. The whole area was known as the Borscht Belt – borscht being the beet drink that came from the European area of Poland and Austria.” Eventual film director Mel Brooks and legendary comedian Don Rickles are among those that took the stage in the Borscht Belt. “People remember Dick Van Dyke, Jerry Lewis and Carol Burnett,” Stier says. “All these comedians, before they had TV shows, would make rounds to all the old hotels.”
The Borscht Belt Festival echoes the past by putting on a celebration of the history with stand-up comedians of current times, a free street fair commemorating Jewish culture and the legacy of the area. Ellenville’s Blueberry Festival has endured for more than three decades, while the Hudson Valley Bluegrass Express is a local favorite music duo.

Restaurants orbiting a central intersection
Eastward down Center Street, less than a third of a mile of where it intersects with Main in the middle of Ellenville, are no fewer than half a dozen restaurants between Center and the parallel Canal Street. Diners find farm-to-table options at Aroma Thyme Bistro and stop in at Marbella’s Tapas Bar. Smoke’n Mo’s serves up barbecue, while The Publik House pours evening drinks and nightcaps close by. The Kosher Garage dishes out ice cream in a café setting south of Warren Street.
Lucky’s Market sits beside the Valero at the intersection of Center and Main. Shoppers can head a little further east to select all-natural goods from Bodi for Life, and there’s also a Walmart Supercenter less than three miles north in Napanoch.
Diners at Aroma Thyme can enjoy a great meal, drinks, and live music.

Unique homes on streets near downtown
An array of architectural designs line the streets of Ellenville, from quaint cottages to the catslide roofs of saltbox houses. Bungalows, ranch-style homes and townhouses are the most common single-family properties found in the neighborhood, many south and west of the central intersection, and there’s multi-family residences as well. “Ellenville’s a sleeper town,” says Donna Brooks, an associate broker and managing partner of the Clement, Brooks & Safier Team at Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Hudson Valley Properties. That quietness belies the convenience to the center of downtown, but makes for a quick drive if locals need a bite to eat or to get outside on the trails. Single-family homes commonly sell for between $200,000 and $350,000, with more unique designs on larger properties sometimes going for $400,000 or more. Multi-unit houses typically range between $250,000 and $500,000.
