A classic small town in Chautauqua County
Ellington, a rural town of around 1,400 residents along the eastern border of Chautauqua County, exudes small-town charm. The hamlet of Ellington, the town's residential hub, offers a small walkable town center and a tight-knit community, while the rest of town consists of acres of woodland and farmland on the cusp of New York State's Amish Country. Established in 1824, Ellington offers a slower pace of life, where residents attend Sunday morning worship services at a tiny white church, kids run around the town park across the street and others walk to the post office to drop off a letter. Local farm stands are often closer than the nearest grocery store, and town gatherings attract nearly virtually everyone in the vicinity. "It's very much small-town easy living around here," says Rachel Willow, a licensed real estate salesperson with five years of industry experience with Howard Hanna.
Local green spaces and community events
While rolling woodlands and winding creeks surround Ellington, the town has just one park. Ellington Town Park, located in the heart of the hamlet, features a playground, a blacktop area and a tiny covered pavilion with a flagpole. Each spring, the park comes alive with the annual Easter Egg Hunt, and families gather again for live music throughout the summer. Residents also take pride in their town-wide Spring Clean Up Day.
As the sun peaks in the height of the summer, Ellington shines during the annual town picnic on the first weekend of August. This three-day event features a woodcutting contest, cake auction, pet show and a horseshoe tournament, with live music and fireworks displays to end the night. The town shifts indoors in the winter with cozy events like the local craft show and Christmas auction.
Just beyond town, Ellington residents can explore thousands of acres of public land at Harris Hill State Forest and Hatch Creek State Forest. Both spots are popular destinations for hiking, fishing, camping and hunting. In the winter, recreation takes on a more snow-themed feel. "You have snowmobile trails, skiing, snowboarding and ice-fishing," says Heather Chase, a real estate salesperson with ERA Real Estate, who grew up in the area. The nearby Ellington Rod & Gun Club is another well-known gathering spot. This members-only club also boasts a small restaurant with occasional live music.
Recreation on Chautauqua Lake
Public boat ramps, lakeside beaches and other green spaces dot the banks of Chautauqua Lake, less than 20 miles away. "Chautauqua is best known for the lake and year-round recreation," Willow says. "But many of our lakefront communities are seasonal." The Chautauqua Institution is one of those seasonal communities, but unlike others, it attracts over 100,000 visitors every summer. "It was originally founded as a Methodist Sunday School retreat to promote adult learning," Chase says. "But today, it offers everything from thought-provoking seminars and history classes to yoga sessions and live performances." The nine-week Institution calendar attracts lifelong learners and leaders from all over the country.
Modest 19th- and 20th-century homes
Historic 19th-century colonial-style farmhouses and 20th-century ramblers line the roads of Ellington, with most residences clustered around the hamlet. Other styles include bungalows with wide front porches and manufactured homes. Most properties feature modest lots with paved driveways and detached garages. There are homes here that could use some TLC, while others are turn-key ready, with blooming gardens and lush lawns. Sales prices typically range from the low $100,000s up to about $270,000, with acreage increasing outside the hamlet. Land is also a draw here, with parcels priced anywhere from $60,000 for 20 acres to nearly $300,000 for 125 acres. The town also garners a CAP Index Crime Score of 1, compared to the national average of 4.
Nearby amenities and entertainment
Ellington may be small, but it boasts a handful of local establishments like the Ellington General Store, a no-frills antique shop. Just next door, Ellington Farman Library not only has books, but also offers board games for the family. Down the road, The Grandview of Ellington is primarily a wedding venue, though it is also open to the public for Friday evening cornhole league tournaments and occasional live music.
In neighboring Cattaraugus County, the New York Amish Trail highlights family-owned establishments that sell everything from fresh produce to handmade furniture. Ellington residents are about 10 miles from Randolph's amenities, which include a chain grocer, Randolph Peaches & Cream, an Amish-owned ice cream shop, and R&M Restaurant. R&M is known for its hearty breakfasts, but the restaurant also marks the start of New York's Amish Country with an old-fashioned buggy and handmade goods for sale just past its entrance. Residents headed west towards Falconer are greeted by other small-town eateries like Belle-View East, a casual spot for fried fish, N.Y. strip steaks and Italian specialties. Additional restaurants, grocers, big-box retailers and entertainment options are scattered throughout the Jamestown metro area.
Ellington's three school districts
Three school districts serve the Town of Ellington: Cassadaga Valley Central, Pine Valley Central and Falconer Central School District. Falconer Central serves most residents in town and earns an overall C-plus rating from Niche. Pre-kindergarteners through second graders may attend C-plus-rated Paul B.D. Temple Elementary School. Third through fifth graders can move on to Harvey C. Fenner Elementary School, which scores a C, before attending Falconer Middle/High School, which earns a C-plus and offers sports programs for middle and high school students. Jamestown Community College is also about 15 miles away.
Commuting around Ellington
CHQ Transit provides public bus service around the county, with stops in the most populous communities. However, bus service is limited in more rural areas like Ellington, making it a car-dependent area. Buffalo Niagara International Airport is about 65 miles northeast via Interstate 90. Jamestown's UPMC Chautauqua is approximately 15 miles southwest via U.S. Route 62, while other nearby roads include Interstate 86 and New York State Route 394.
