Elliston offers quiet living between Roanoke and Blacksburg
Tucked in a valley between two Blue Ridge Mountain peaks, Elliston offers quiet living with convenient access to Roanoke and Blacksburg. Part of Montgomery County, this area has long been known as an agricultural community. Virginia Tech, which opened in 1872 as the Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College, has played a significant role in the region’s development. While there isn’t any new development happening in “Eastmont” — the name locals gave to the east edge of Montgomery County — residents can easily access nearby shopping hubs and a large trail network.
Traditional homes and newer townhomes starting in the $250,000s
Homebuyers can find ranch-style homes, colonials and Cape Cods built in the 1900s. Some houses were constructed closer together, but others can have lot sizes ranging from a half-acre to five acres. Most properties have driveways, and some also come with detached garages. Homes tend to stay on the market for about three weeks and typically sell for $250,000 to $350,000. There are townhomes available in the Midway Estates community that also go for $250,000 to $350,000.
Career and technical education courses at Eastern Montgomery High
Students may start at Eastern Montgomery Elementary, which gets a C-plus from Niche, before going to Shawsville Middle, which earns a B-minus. Eastern Montgomery High also receives a B-minus and has a career and technical education department with courses in fields like engineering, agriculture and medical sciences.
Commuting via Route 460, I-81
U.S. Route 460 runs 14 miles east to Roanoke and 19 miles west to Blacksburg. Interstate 81 is also close by and connects to Interstate 64, which is about 60 miles north. The LewisGale Hospital in Montgomery is 14 miles west. The closest airport, Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional, is 20 miles east.
Community green space, endless hiking trails
Eastern Montgomery Park is a neighborhood green space featuring a playground, picnic pavilion and a short trail along the river with a kayak launch. Just to the north, Dixie Caverns has been giving year-round tours of its underground rock formations since 1923. There are sports facilities for baseball and soccer 3 miles south at Creed Fields Park. The Blacksburg Country Club is 12 miles west with a private 18-hole golf course, a heated swimming pool and tennis courts. And the Blue Ridge Mountains that dominate Montgomery County offer over 150 miles of hiking trails.
Shopping and dining along Route 460
Just outside of Elliston along Route 460, there’s a Dollar General for essentials. Camino Viejo is a locally owned restaurant with authentic Mexican dishes. Residents can also head 10 miles north to the Spartan Square shopping center in Salem for over a dozen stores like Walmart, Lowe’s Home Improvement and Pet Supplies Plus.
Eastmont Community Foundation annual events
The Eastmont Community Foundation, headquartered in neighboring Shawsville, hosts several events throughout the year, including their popular Tomato Festival. Held in August at the Meadowbrook Center, the event features contests for tomato art and tomato recipes, as well as a tomato pageant for the best tomato-themed outfit. There’s also food vendors, live music and family activities. The Oldtown Nights Concert Series is held from May to October at Old Town Fields. And the foundation’s Casino Night in January raises money for the organization.
