Emeryville North

History and art are close at hand
A historic walking tour of Emeryville tells the tale of the city’s independent streak. It points out some relics of that “rotten” time, old warehouses, historic buildings, and one remaining card club. In its early history, local gambling interests resisted strong pressure to be absorbed by Oakland or Berkeley. “That probably would have spelled the end of the racetrack or at least the gambling, not to mention the industry-friendly environment the city held,” says Rob Arias, who lived in Emeryville for 18 years and dug into the city’s history as founder of the E’ville Eye, a local news site. “They basically carved out, or gerrymandered, all the churches that were in the eastern part of the town to dilute the religious influence throughout prohibition.” The E’ville Eye sells tongue-in-cheek t-shirts that promote the “Rottenest City” moniker. More recent history includes the inception of the 45th Street Artists’ Cooperative, a working/living space founded in 1973. Many members display their work in the roving Emeryville Celebration of the Arts held in various locations around town every October. Art is on display all year round as well at the Compound Gallery, an art hub with a shop and studios, and in public art installations scattered throughout the city. The old and the new offered in restaurants and shops
The Townhouse claims deep roots amongst dozens of shopping and dining options in Emeryville North. The establishment has been a speakeasy, brothel, bar, family restaurant, and now the Townhouse Bar & Grill. "It’s definitely a gathering place,” says Sara Garabedian of Red Oak Realty, who as a Realtor in the area for 40 years has meetings there with many clients. “There’s also the Doyle Street Cafe for breakfast and lunch, a small mom-and-pop that anchors the community. You have a clientele that frequents these places several times a month.” Even the relatively newer joints, like Prizefighter Bar, nod to the old with industrial decor and old-timey cocktails. But just outside the neighborhood, at Bay Street Emeryville, new development is up-to-the-minute. The outdoor shopping mall in the Pacific Park Plaza area offers a range of restaurants, from Mumu Hot Pot to Pippal Regional Indian to the Shake Shack. Shops include favorites like Victoria’s Secret, Urban Outfitters, and ALDO. The first IKEA in California is in Emeryville. There’s a Trader Joe’s for groceries, and Emeryville will soon be welcoming Tokyo Central, a large popular Japan-based grocer.Eclectic features in housing draw a community of creatives
Within the borders of Emeryville North, industry and office complexes take up much of the real estate. Of the 500 homes, the townhomes and condos are located in converted warehouses and mixed-use buildings on the west side of the neighborhood. Condos range from around $525,000 for a small one bedroom to $960,000 for a spacious two-bedroom loft. "Some of these old buildings have very cool vibes and offer an alternative lifestyle,” says Garabedian. The converted warehouses feature exposed brick, steel beams and other industrial accents. “They are all very eclectic and interesting. Emeryville is very small but has all these amazing and creative elements.” Single-family homes in the styles of Craftsman bungalows and four-squares fill chunks of the eastern edge, but they are rarely on the market. When they become available, they range from around $800,000 to $1 million. Garabedian worked with a landscape architect back in the 1980s who renovated many of these homes after a period of decline. “It’s a vibrant community. They close off the street for an annual potluck,” she says.Greenway, parks and bayfront recreation opportunities
The Emeryville Greenway, built over 20 years with sustainability features, historical markers and a bike path separate from the pedestrian walkway, is a major draw for recreation. Other popular spots include Doyle Hollis Park, central to the neighborhood with a large green space and a small amphitheater, and Stanford Avenue Park, a smaller park next to the neighborhood's Eastern edge, which features playgrounds and basketball courts. Bayfront areas such as a segment of the San Francisco Bay Trail and the Emeryville Marina are in easy reach.Walkability plus easy access to regional destinations
Emeryville is a place where car-free living is increasingly possible. The city has been investing in bike and pedestrian infrastructures. The South Bayfront Bridge for bicyclists and pedestrians now crosses railroad tracks that previously fractured the city. The Emery Go-Round shuttle buses people around town and stops at nearby Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) stations. Alameda-Contra Costa County Transit bus stops are along Horton Street and Amtrak has an Emeryville Station connecting to the entire West Coast. Regional destinations are accessible by car as well. Interstate 580 runs alongside Emeryville and Interstate 80 crosses the Bay Bridge into San Francisco. The Oakland International Airport is 14 miles south of Emeryville, and San Francisco International Airport is about 22 miles away.Emery High offers hardy sports program
The Emery Unified School District serves the Emeryville North neighborhood. Kids can begin their education at Anna Yates Elementary School, which serves kindergarten through eighth-grade students and is graded C on Niche. They can continue their schooling at Emery High School, graded B-minus. Emery High has built up its sports programming; in addition to football, basketball and baseball, students can participate in volleyball, wrestling, tennis and water polo. A private option, Pacific Rim International School offers multiple languages and a Montessori-based curriculum. The University of California, Berkeley, is less than 3 miles away.
