Environmental factors regarding light pollution and wildfires
Emigration Canyon’s remote location comes with a few environmental considerations. DarkSky, a global organization dedicated to preserving the night sky, has recognized the area as a certified Dark Sky Community. The town earned this title by implementing strict outdoor lighting regulations and other rules to minimize light pollution, allowing residents and wildlife to enjoy clear, star-filled nights.
The area’s hot, dry climate in the summer heightens wildfire risk. Local efforts to combat the risk include educational webinars, community wildfire events and the annual Firewise Day, which pairs a pancake breakfast with fire safety presentations. Fireworks have been prohibited in previous years, and open fires are restricted, though these policies are subject to change depending on conditions and guidance from the Unified Fire Authority.
Two restaurants and Salt Lake City shopping nearby
One of Emigration Canyon’s main draws is its seclusion from commercial development. The community has two restaurants that operate side by side. Ruth’s Diner has served comfort food since 1930 and offers live music on the patio during the summer. Emigration Brewing Co. pairs regional beers with seafood, steak and wood-fired pizza. Big-box retailers, such as Walmart, Dan’s Market and a Harmons grocery store, are within 5 to 10 miles in Salt Lake City.
