Emory is built around a small university in Southwest Virginia
The Virginia town of Emory is built around Emory and Henry University, a nearly 200-year-old institution at the heart of the community. “It is very much the ‘private college town.’ It’s not very big at all,” says Doug Callebs, a broker at Callebs Realty and a longtime resident of Southwest Virginia. “A lot of people who go to Emory tend to stick around here. It’s a tight group.” Most residents are affiliated with the university, but the campus energy pairs with the quiet beauty of rural Southwest Virginia.
Faculty housing near campus, and larger farmhouses on acreage
Laid out along the rolling foothills of Appalachia, Emory homes mainly cluster around the university. Its 1,300 students generally live on campus, but faculty and staff typically reside in the surrounding community. Ranch-style homes from the 1960s are most common, generally selling from $200,000 to the mid-$300,000s. A bit further from the university, farmhouse-style houses tend to be more recently built and can sometimes sit on acreage. These sell from the low $400,000s to upper $600,000s, usually based on lot size. Some new construction has popped up, including townhomes; one unit hit the market in the upper $200,000s. The median home price in Emory is significantly higher than in neighboring Meadowview, mainly due to the demand the university provides.

Students can go to Washington County Public Schools
Washington County Public Schools serves Emory, with students starting at Meadowview Elementary. The school receives a B-plus grade from Niche. Glade Spring Middle also receives a B-plus, while Patrick Henry High rates a B-minus. Patrick Henry High students can take career education courses in subjects including agriculture and business. Emory and Henry University enrolls over 1,300 students in its undergraduate and graduate programs.
Meadowview Elementary received a score of 5 out of 10 from GreatSchools.
Patrick Henry High School scored a 7 out of 10 from GreatSchools.

Access to the 'outdoor mecca' of Appalachia
Between the Appalachian Mountains' ridges, Emory has access to the area’s renowned trails and natural preserves. The Virginia Creeper Trail runs along a former rail line between Abingdon and Whitetop and was designated by Congress as a National Recreation Trail. The trailhead is roughly 10 miles from Emory. Meanwhile, the Channels Natural Area Preserve is 14 miles away and offers trails through crevices and gaps of large sandstone formations. The Appalachian Trail cuts through the town of Damascus, 15 miles from Emory. Nearby lakes such as South Holston Lake attract anglers to the water. “Hiking, horseback, biking, trout fishing — those are all biggies,” Callebs says. “It’s an outdoor mecca. There’s a little bit of everything here.”
Go for a hike at The Channels Natural Area Preserve to see rock formations and an old fire tower.
You don't have to drive far out of Emory to be totally immersed in the Appalachian Mountain range.

Events at Emory and Henry, like football games
As a college community, Emory’s social life is often based around Emory and Henry. Sports, in particular, are important events in the community, with football games — and their preceding tailgates — frequently drawing more than 5,000 attendees. The university’s McGlothlin Center for the Arts offers an art gallery, often with visiting exhibitions, and a pair of theaters for concerts, musicals and dance performances.

I-81 runs through Southwest Virginia
Interstate 81 runs past Emory as the main corridor through Southwest Virginia. The town of Abingdon is roughly 10 miles away and is often the closest place for services, including Johnston Memorial Hospital. Tri-Cities Airport is about 40 miles away and has commercial flights to hubs like Atlanta and Charlotte. Within the community, the Emory Cab provides transportation to students, staff and faculty of the university, often for a small fee.
Student-focused businesses in Emory
Emory has only a small handful of businesses, almost exclusively aimed at serving students at the university. The coffee shop Hot Shots and pizza and pasta joint Piazza each cater to undergraduates, as does the Emory Mercantile Company across the street, which offers spiritwear and accessories. Groceries and other essentials can be found at the Walmart in Abingdon, which also provides more eateries and shops.
Piazza features a full bar as well as several tasty dinner and lunch items on the menu.

Emory’s CAP Index Crime Score is 1 out of 10 overall, notably low compared to the national average of 4. Scores for violent and property crimes are each below the national figure. “It’s an unlocked-door sort of area,” Callebs says. “Crime is nonexistent, really. We’re very fortunate.”
