Small-town heart on the Ohio River
Before astronaut Michael Fincke broke what was then the American record for spending the most time in space, he called Emsworth, Pennsylvania, home. Emsworth is a quaint borough on the Ohio River, less than 5 miles north of Pittsburgh. Its residents enjoy nearby hiking trails, local eateries, quiet streets and historic homes. “Emsworth has a very nice, small-town feel,” says Jennifer Waters, a native Pittsburgher and local Realtor with Howard Hanna Real Estate Services. “It’s got a lot of community spirit. Every year, they do a Christmas event at the fire hall with a horse and carriage. There’s a fun Halloween parade down the main street, Center Avenue, too. It’s popular for families. You’ll see kids out biking, playing — there’s a lot for them to do.”

From Victorian grandeur to midcentury charm
“For the school district it’s in, Emsworth is very affordable,” Waters says. “The homes tend to be older; most are 100 or 75 years old now. They’re midsized houses with a lot of character on smaller lots, so it’s a nice entry-level for first-time homebuyers.” While a handful of properties built in the 1850s predate Emsworth’s incorporation in 1896, most properties in the borough cropped up between 1900 and the 1950s, with the median year built being 1935. The area’s older homes include Victorians and Tudor Revivals. American Foursquares, Craftsman bungalows and Colonial Revivals came later. Midcentury ranch-style homes joined the community last, often raised to best utilize Emsworth’s hilly landscape. Many properties have narrow driveways, but residents can rely on street parking when guests are over. Emsworth is also home to a couple of condominium buildings, such as Walnut Ridge. Overall list prices range from $109,000 to $477,000.

Chev & Rachel’s Family Diner
“Emsworth is very small; there’s no grocery store there, but shopping is only 5 or 10 minutes away,” Waters says. “The main street has some little storefronts and local businesses. Chev’s is a really cute diner there.” Chev & Rachel’s Family Diner is a family-owned and -operated neighborhood hub for breakfast and lunch. Locals enjoy its piping hot coffee, crispy home fries and quick service, which is why tables fill up so fast. Delectable dinners await at Café Notte, an award-winning, family-owned and -operated Italian restaurant and bar. Right in the neighborhood, the Cafe Notte staff cook up a storm with locally sourced ingredients, as well as homemade bread and pasta. As for where to restock the pantry, it’s only a 3-mile drive to the nearest grocery store, Giant Eagle Supermarket, which is right next to The Home Depot off Camp Horne Road.

Easy commute to downtown Pittsburgh
“Emsworth is a great place to live for commuters,” Waters says. Interstate 79 can be accessed with ease by taking Camp Horne Road out of the north side. Alternatively, residents can leave the borough via the south side, taking Ohio River Boulevard/PA Route 65 all the way downtown, avoiding the parkway entirely. As for carless commutes, Pittsburgh Regional Transit bus stops can be found along main roads like Center Avenue and Route 65.
