New developments between ocean and wetlands in Central Englewood
Between the beaches on Manasota Key and the Myakka State Forest is Central Englewood, a neighborhood where new housing developments are accented by lush palms, palmettos and pines. Here, residents make use of the dependably warm southwest Florida weather, heading to one of the beaches on Manasota Key. “You can see kids riding their bikes up and down the streets,” says Leslie Brown, a Realtor with Sand Dollar Home Team and an Englewood local since 1989, adding, “It’s a very family-oriented neighborhood.” The neighborhood is also home to 55-plus communities like Foxwood and Park Forest where residents enjoy outdoor pools and rec centers. Less than 2 miles west of Central Englewood is Old Englewood Village and Dearborn Street, a retail district dating back to the days of the Florida land boom. A century later, residents can still shop along the historic street, dining outside at brightly painted cafes and picking up beachy trinkets in tiny boutiques. Of course, more options can always be found about 12 miles north in Venice or in the larger city of Sarasota, 20 miles beyond that.
Central Englewood is bordered on the West by Lemon Bay.

Ranch-styles and Romanesque entries surrounded by palm trees
In Central Englewood, ranch-styles and custom single-family homes sit comfortably on quarter-acre lots with lush tropical landscaping. The neighborhood’s newest builds feature Romanesque-style arched entryways and decorative windows. Spanish Mediterranean homes are common in gated communities surrounding Oyster Creek Golf Club. Storm shutters, a preventative measure against hurricane damage, are common, and some properties still show wear and tear from Hurricane Ian, which hit Southwest Florida hard in 2022. Compared to waterfront homes in Old Englewood Village to the west, inland properties in Central Englewood are more affordable. “You can get a brand-new house for $350,000,” says Brown, adding, “The range is about $300,000 to $500,000, which is the highest you’d pay for a home in that area. And most have three bedrooms.” What’s more, “You’re still close to the beaches, just 10 minutes in either direction.”

Dual enrollment opportunities in Charlotte County public schools
According to Brown, Central Englewood’s top-rated public schools make it a highly sought-after community. Students can attend Sarasota County public schools like Englewood Elementary, which received an A-minus from the educational review site, Niche. As part of an interlocal agreement, some students will enroll in Charlotte County public schools like L.A. Ainger Middle School and Lemon Bay High School, which both earned B-pluses. At Lemon Bay High, qualified students can participate in the dual enrollment program, attending college-level or technical courses at Charlotte Technical Center, State College of Florida or Florida Southwestern College.
L.A. Ainger Middle School is a well-regarded educational institution.

Retail along Dearborn Street and McCall Road
Dearborn Street, Old Englewood Village’s main thoroughfare, is home to a collection of small, family-run businesses. Locals can sit outside at the Dearborn Coffee House and Bakery, which has a menu full of daily brews and flaky croissants. Across the street is Bobarino’s Pizzeria, which has plenty of vegetarian-friendly and vegan options. Cool off at A Better Scoop Ice Cream Shop, a “mom and pop” business known for serving homemade ice cream in glass dishes. Nearby is Publix Super Market at Olde Village where locals can check items off their grocery lists. For more retail options — and yet another Publix — head south to Merchant’s Crossing and drive along McCall Road.

A farmer’s market and vintage collectibles in Old Englewood Village
On Thursday mornings from October through May stop by Pioneer Plaza for the Olde Englewood Village Farmer’s Market. Vendors sell everything from fresh pepper jams to locally-grown blueberries. Open afternoons and evenings Thursday through Sunday is the Pop Culture Antique Museum, also known as the largest retro store in southwest Florida. Shop for decades-old Barbie Dolls and Star Trek collectibles. Part of Ringling College of Art + Design, the Englewood Art Center has a rotating list of exhibitions, hands-on classes and lectures. Of course, there are always more opportunities in downtown Venice, just 12 miles north along Florida State Road 776 and the South Tamiami Trail. Listen to the Venice Symphony at the Venice Performing Arts Center, or head to the Venice Theater. Although the main stage was severely damaged by Hurricane Ian in September 2022, residents can still watch musicals, dramatic plays and concerts at The Raymond Center behind. The larger city of Sarasota is 30 miles — or about an hour — north.

Public beaches, state forests and semi-private golf courses
Beach days are spent on Manasota Key, located directly across Lemon Bay. Residents enjoy the white sands at Blind Pass Beach (also known as Middle Beach). Or on the bay side, explore the walking trails winding through a Mangrove forest and head to the fishing dock. There’s also Stump Pass Beach State Park, a go-to location for swimming and collecting shark teeth. It’s not uncommon to spot manatees amongst the waves. To the east, find Myakka State Forest, which spans over 8,500 acres and includes more than 40 miles of hiking trails. Annual passes are available, and one-day entry fees are $2 per person. Golf is also a popular outdoor pastime in Central Englewood. Oyster Creek Golf Club is semi-private and offers a unique 18-hole format heavy on par-3s that plays to just under 4,000 yards. There’s also Myakka Pines Golf Club, which prides itself on its affordable membership options. Contributing to the neighborhood’s “family-oriented feel,” in the words of Brown, The Englewood Sports Complex offers eight little league fields along with picnic facilities, an indoor gymnasium and pickleball courts.

Airport access via Interstate 75, a nearby hospital and extreme weather
Public transit in Central Englewood is minimal, and residents rely on cars (and sometimes even golf carts) to get around. There are several airport options in surrounding cities — some will head to Punta Gorda Airport, located about 40 miles east along Interstate 75. From here, Allegiant Air offers direct service to approximately 50 unique destinations. There’s also the Sarasota Bradenton International Airport 40 miles north along I-75. More than 10 airlines operate out of the facility. HCA Florida Englewood Hospital is located within the neighborhood itself; here, doctors specialize in everything from cardiology to orthopedic care. It’s also important to note that Central Englewood residents have dealt with their fair share of extreme weather. Hurricane Ian hit Southwest Florida particularly hard in 2022, and residents worked together to rebuild damaged homes and businesses.
