Strong sense of community in Old Englewood Village
Old Englewood Village is more than its popular Historic Dearborn Street shopping district. Residents are known to support each other. Leslie Brown, Realtor with The Sand Dollar Home Team of Keller Williams Coastal Living, first noticed this in the aftermath of Hurricane Ian in 2022. “We were hard hit by Hurricane Ian, but that just brought people a lot closer,” Brown says. That sense of community was only reinforced after hurricanes Helene and Milton in the early fall of 2024. “There is that determination to come together.” Even when there is no crisis, residents gather to support the many local businesses on Dearborn Street or attend a monthly artist gallery at Pioneer Plaza. “It’s really just a beautiful, small, quaint town,” says Kathi Obendorfer, president of the Olde Englewood Village Association (OEVA). OEVA, a nonprofit that works alongside Sarasota County and the Englewood Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) to improve the city, is another testament to the community. The organization is responsible for many civic events, including the Christmas Walk and Parade.

Dearborn Street is exclusively local businesses
Boutiques, cafes, studios and restaurants line Dearborn Street. “All the shops are unique,” Brown says. “It’s a beautiful thing that so many points of view come together.” Every business is independently owned; no franchises are allowed on Dearborn. Palm Studio is a yoga studio on the same block as Ivy’s on Dearborn – a clothing store – and the Green Artist gift shop. Locals can grab a latte from The Dearborn Coffeehouse and Bakery. The colorful Mango Bistro is a staple of the community that serves breakfast and lunch. “It’s been here for a long time,” Obendorfer says. Patrons of Englewoods on Dearborn, a popular dinner destination, can enjoy live music with their meal. Dearborn’s vibrant atmosphere goes beyond the businesses. Sixteen colorful statues by Englewood artists will soon line the street, all part of the “Feathers and Flippers” campaign. This collection of herons, sea turtles and dolphins is just one of the ways that the city is hoping to bring more color to Dearborn. The goal is to eventually have 25 sculptures on display.
The closest grocery store is Publix. Target, Lowe’s and Walmart are within 10 miles. From October to May, shoppers can explore vendors selling fresh produce, baked goods, meats and seafood. “Thousands of people come from all over the place for the farmers market,” Brown says. “It’s a mob scene every Thursday.” Dogs are welcome as long as they are on a leash.

Englewood artist exhibits and annual celebrations
The Artist Colony is one of the driving factors that brings together Englewood creatives. The collective gives people a chance to show off and sell their wares. “We have a lot of art shows,” Brown says. The Outdoor Gallery is held at Pioneer Plaza on the first and third Wednesdays from October to April; vendors move indoors to Elk Lodge on second Wednesdays from June to October, excluding August. On the fourth Tuesday, residents can explore boutiques during the monthly Discover Dearborn series. Each month comes with a different special offer. Past examples include discounted yoga classes at Palm Studio and a raffle at Ivy’s on Dearborn.
Annual events include the Christmas Walk, which rings in the holiday season. “The Englewood Fire Department brings Santa in on a firetruck,” Obendorfer says. Attendees can stroll along Dearborn Street, stopping at tables with cookie decorating and face painting while enjoying music from the Lemon Bay High School Marching Band. Locals look forward to the bike raffle each year.

“Old Florida” vibe in Englewood homes
Part of what makes Old Englewood Village unique is its ability to maintain an “Old Florida” atmosphere, which is evident along Historic Dearborn Street and reinforced in residential areas. “‘Old Florida,’ to me, means old-growth trees and no subdivisions, with a variety of homes and white picket fences,” Brown says. This is represented by well-established cypress, palm and oak trees surrounding grassy front lawns. Most of the area is older homes, built between the 1920s and 1980s. Single-story layouts, including ranch-style houses and cottages, are common. The few new traditional builds often feature Spanish influences like stucco exteriors and tile roofs. Prices for a two-bedroom house usually range from $250,000 to $375,000, while larger properties can cost $375,000 to $575,000. Multifamily properties typically go for $375,000 to $525,000. The Federal Emergency Management Agency says Old Englewood Village has a very high chance of hurricanes. While the risk of flooding is relatively low, most properties are in a Special Flood Hazard Area. Flood insurance is recommended for everyone and required by most mortgage lenders.

Lemon Bay Park is peaceful nature space
Outdoor opportunities surround Old Englewood Village, including the 210-acre Lemon Bay Park. “It’s very peaceful, tranquil,” Obendorfer says. Pet-friendly trails go past butterfly gardens and a mangrove forest. A canoe launch lets out onto Lemon Bay. The park’s environmental center hosts guided bird and nature walks. Indian Mound is farther south. It is part of the Trail of Florida’s Indian Heritage, a collection of parks, museums and other attractions highlighting Native American history and heritage. The contours of the parks are a direct result of Native American residency; its features now include a boat launch, walking trails and wildlife. At Elsie Quirk Library, patrons of all ages can join clubs like the Englewood Pokémon League and a local knitting club.
Hurricanes Helene and Milton impacted Englewood Beach and nearby Stump Pass Beach State Park. The parks’ websites provide information on clean-up and public access.
