A rural feel in the Cascade foothills
Set in the Cascade foothills within sight of Mount Rainier, Enumclaw maintains its rural feel even as it’s become a bedroom community for Tacoma and Seattle. “We’re still a town that has the homecoming parade downtown, and everybody turns out for it," says Todd Huizenga, a broker with Keller Williams Mountains to Sound Realty who grew up in the city. "And when the hometown football team goes to state, they drive the bus down Cole Street and everyone comes out." Enumclaw (pronounced EE-num-claw] means “thundering noise” in Salish, the area's Native American language, and was founded in the late 1800s as a railroad and logging town. Today, its biggest attraction is proximity to outdoor recreation: Federation Forest State Park borders the community, and Mount Rainier National Park is roughly 22 miles away.

Near Mount Rainier National Park
Enumclaw has over 10 city parks, featuring playgrounds, disc golf and green space, and at the public Enumclaw Golf Course, golfers can play 18 holes with mountain views. The Enumclaw Expo Center hosts some of the community’s biggest events, like the annual King County Fair each July and the Enumclaw Pro Rodeo in August. The 22-mile Foothills Trail, a paved-over former railroad, provides a way for cyclists to get from Enumclaw to Puyallup.
According to U.S. Climate Data, Enumclaw typically sees around 60 inches of rain each year, but that doesn’t prevent locals from getting outside at nearby hiking areas like Mud Mountain Dam. Mount Rainier National Park offers more hiking 22 miles away. In winter, skiers head to Crystal Mountain, the state’s biggest ski resort. “It’s one of the best ski areas in Washington, maybe in the country,” says Jim Clifford, a broker with Washington Realty Group who’s sold homes in the area for 45 years.

Craftsman homes with Mount Rainier views
The median home sale price in Enumclaw is $650,000, higher than the national median of roughly $410,000. “There’s been a lot of new construction over the last few years, but there’s a lot of homes from the early 1900s through the 1950s,” Clifford says, “so you're going to find a real difference in size, design and type of construction.” Early 20th-century Craftsman and Queen Anne-era styles are near Griffin Avenue and Porter Street, while midcentury ranch-style houses sit along gridded streets in the city’s northeast. The west and south sides have a more suburban feel, with late 20th- and early 21st-century Craftsman-inspired new traditional homes in subdivisions with cul-de-sacs and manicured lawns. The city’s recent growth has fueled an increase in single-family home construction along the city’s outskirts. “About 400 new housing units are on their way in the next few years,” Huizenga says. Outside of the city limits, rural properties on up to 30 acres can fetch up to $1.7 million.

Downtown restaurants along Cole Street
Enumclaw’s walkable downtown core is centered around Cole Street, where boutiques and longstanding restaurants line the narrow street. “On the weekends they shut off the road to the main part of downtown so you can walk across the street without traffic,” Huizenga says. The street also closes for the city’s parades, the most popular of which is the Christmas Parade. The Chalet Theatre downtown hosts live music and comedy shows, and it also screens the latest movies. Grocery stores are along Roosevelt Avenue, and the nearest big-box stores are 11 miles away in Bonney Lake.

About 45 minutes to Tacoma and Seattle
Three state routes meet in Enumclaw: Route 410 leads west over the mountains, Route 169 leads to Maple Valley and Route 164 leads to Auburn. Tacoma is about 28 miles away, and Seattle is a roughly 41-mile trip. “From Enumclaw, you’re 45 minutes to Tacoma, and without traffic, you're about 45 minutes from Seattle,” Huizenga says. “It’s definitely a bedroom community of commuters.” King County’s DART bus has routes to Auburn. Sidewalks make the downtown core pedestrian-friendly, but most residents rely on their cars to get around. Seattle-Tacoma International Airport is around 32 miles away. St. Elizabeth Hospital is the city’s only hospital.
Crime rates below state figures
According to FBI statistics, Enumclaw’s rates of violent and property crime increased in 2023, but rates typically remain below state figures. The Enumclaw Police Department employs over 30 sworn officers and uses drones to help officers, particularly when investigating car thefts.
