The crossroads of North Central Mass
Warwick is at the crossroads of everything in North Central Massachusetts. In the center of town sits a rustic wooden sign, guiding people in whatever direction they need. Worcester is 40 minutes away and Vernon, Vermont, is 9 miles in the opposite direction. Keene, New Hampshire, is about 20 miles north, and Boston is 75 miles east. Warwick is centrally located, but there’s not much going on. “It’s a very small rural community,” says Keith McGuirk, a retired Realtor and chair of the Economic Development Industrial Corporation in nearby Athol. “Nobody works in Warwick.”

Miles between New England log cabins
Traditional suburban neighborhoods do not exist in Warwick. Instead, the area has log cabins on dozens of acres, waterfront homes on a cold-water pond, clapboard colonials and empty overgrown lots with dozens of acres. “There are no neighborhoods. You can drive a mile down the road before you hit the next house,” says McGuirk. Home prices range between $210,000 and about $450,000. The North Central region’s population is growing, says McGuirk, which happens every time the real estate market booms. “We get these waves of migration every 15 years or so,” he says.

Warwick has sprawling acres of forest, including the Mount Grace State Forest, a network of multi-use trails leading to a 1,621-ft. summit. People hike, ski and ride their horses through the wooded area, which is also dog-friendly. Chase Hill Farm makes farmstead cheese from its cows. American Guinea Hogs roam at Timberhaven Farms, which produces poultry, pork and fresh eggs.

Warwick Community School's natural campus
Warwick has a small school district with one school, Warwick Community School. The school sits on a 25-acre wooded campus, and nature is part of its curriculum. A campus redesign, including an amphitheater, gardens and a network of trails, is underway. After sixth grade, kids can enroll in Pioneer Valley Regional School in Northfield for grades 7-12.
Rural, but near Route 78
Athol Hospital is the nearest hospital to Warwick, and it’s about 15 minutes south. Route 78 is the major north-south roadway in town, and it crosses into New Hampshire. Directly south of Warwick is Route 2, one of two major east-west highways in Massachusetts between the New York border and the Boston area. People looking to be surrounded by farmhouses and woods will find both in Warwick.
