Quiet suburban haven 6 miles from Pittsburgh
The borough of Etna was named after the Mt. Etna volcano, whose molten lava mirrors the blazing fires of the industrial blast furnaces once prominent in the former steel-town-turned-quiet-suburban-haven. While the greater Pittsburgh area has been experiencing a population decline, Etna has remained a popular option for those coming in. "You have a lot of people looking at the area for a suburb of Pittsburgh close to the city," says Sara Leitera, a Realtor at Berkshire Hathaway. She's been selling in the Pittsburgh area for 16 years. In many ways, Etna is just like any other Pittsburgh suburb, with hilly terrain, mature houses, and a modest park system, but its robust walkable main street and the diversity of striking architecture paired with affordable pricing set it apart.
Etna is right next to Route 8 making traveling anywhere else in PA very easy.
In Etna, Butler Street is their business district, often bustling with activity and customers.

Shopping and dining along Butler Street
Red brick Italianate-style row houses filled with local shops and eateries line Butler Street to create Etna's commercial district. "Etna has a lot of breweries and little shops that have been there a long time. The pierogi store is cool," Leitera says. She's referring to Cop Out Pierogies, a locally-owned eatery offering everything from traditional potato and cheese pierogies to uniquely flavored ones like macaroni and cheese. Patrons can also indulge in dessert pierogies, which merge the classic Polish dumplings with the flavors of popular sweet treats like salted caramel. Another popular spot on the main drag is E Town Bar & Grill, a classic American bar known for its casual fare and laid-back environment. Patrons can sit at the wood-top bar or one of the high bistro tables as they munch on a fried fish sandwich and sip on a cold beer. Residents can visit neighboring communities for additional dining and shopping needs.

Striking 19th and 20th century homes
Most homes here were built between the late 19th and mid-20th centuries and sit on long, narrow lots. While many have been updated, others have simply been maintained, boasting original stained-glass windows and traditional dark wooden interior trims. Popular architectural styles include American foursquares with dormer windows, bungalows with steep roof lines, vibrant Victorian craftsman homes with bay windows, and Tudor-inspired Cape Cods with asymmetrical entryways. These dwellings typically boast two to four bedrooms and sell for between $170,000 and $220,000. Slightly larger homes can pop up from time to time. When they do, they can sell for as much as $350,000.
