Western North Carolina community about 25 miles south of Asheville

As the French Broad River flows downhill out of Asheville, it meanders through the small Henderson County township of Etowah. This community of homes and farms has less than 8,000 people and rests in a valley with the peaks of the Blue Ridge Mountains surrounding it on all sides. “Other than the golf club, it’s kind of a pitstop on the way to Brevard or Hendersonville,” says Amanda Jennings Gravley, the broker in charge of Fisher Realty Brevard. “A big thing is there are not a lot of industries or jobs in Etowah. People are moving here because they want to be here.” She adds that, aside from agriculture, tourism and construction are major pillars of the economy.

The Henderson County Sheriff’s Office serves Etowah. However, crime data specific to the township is not readily available.

Spacious properties with views of the Blue Ridge

Although the median price for a single-family home in Etowah is around $475,000, slightly above the national median, the city offers lower home prices than larger communities in the area.“You will see price points significantly lower than Brevard and Hendersonville,” Jennings Gravley says. Nature surrounds properties here, with homes often resting on wooded lots of a half-acre or more. Architectural styles include Craftsman, Modern Transitional and ranch-style homes.
Hurricane Helene hit western North Carolina in September 2024. However, Etowah did not suffer as much damage as other nearby communities, such as Asheville. FEMA flood maps indicate that some Etowah properties, especially near the French Broad River, rest in flood hazard areas.

Appalachian adventures close to home, Etowah Park in town

A patchwork of pastures and dense forest hugs the banks of the French Broad River as it flows around Etowah. Two access points are close to town to launch kayaks and boats. Moonshine Mountain Snow Tubing Park is about 6 miles away for thrilling downhill slides in the winter. Holmes Educational State Forest is roughly 10 miles south for outdoor exploration, and two nearby lakes offer nature-focused camps and retreats. The peaks, rolling wilderness and winding drives along the Blue Ridge Mountains are a short drive away.
The Etowah Lions Club created the town’s sole public park, which is mainly for sports, with ballfields and tennis courts. However, a walking path loops around the park, and a new playground will be open by the summer of 2025. Two golf courses are in the community, including the popular Etowah Valley Golf & Resort, which features three nine-hole courses over challenging terrain.

Etowah Library and Ingles Markets anchor the town center

The center of Etowah features a public library as well as a few stores to pick up everyday needs, from prescriptions to groceries. “You’ve got your Ingles and your restaurants. It doesn’t have a true downtown, but you’re 15 to 20 minutes from downtown Brevard and downtown Hendersonville, and you’re not too far from Asheville,” says Jennings Gravley, who says that residents head out of Etowah for events, nightlife and larger shopping trips. She adds that the planned 19-mile Ecusta Trail will make it possible to reach the neighboring communities on foot or by bike. “When it’s completed, it will cut right through Etowah, which will make it a more active and attractive location.”
