A hilly and quiet residential community in southeast Eugene
Fairmount is a residential community tucked into the forested hills of southeastern Eugene. The neighborhood was originally an independent, late 19th-century city called Fairmount City. After its annexation in 1902, it became a prominent quarter of Eugene, notable for its scenic central park, undulating hills and proximity to the University of Oregon. "It has a beautiful aesthetic, and it's convenient," says Teresa Moshofsky, a long-time Fairmount resident and a real estate broker with Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate/Equinox in Eugene. "It has a very energetic vibe. Some really good hills make for a great workout."
Locals live in Mediterranean homes and Craftsman bungalows
Fairmount features a collection of Mediterranean homes known for stucco walls, low-pitched tile roofs and arched windows. Additional housing styles include Craftsman bungalows, Northwest Contemporaries and ranch-style homes, which have become a staple of the Pacific Northwest's housing stock. Two-bedroom versions of these homes tend to fetch $350,000 to $600,000, while three or four-bedroom homes range in price from $450,000 to $850,000. And a few homes along Elk and Summit Avenue reach the million-dollar mark. A handful of "estate houses" cost more than $1 million and have been occupied by former University of Oregon chancellors, presidents, track coaches and other dignitaries.

Locals spend their time hiking the hillside trails of Hendricks Park
There's a lot to enjoy in terms of outdoor recreation in Fairmount, but Hendricks Park is the community's beating heart. The park is Eugene's oldest, prominent for its vibrant rhododendron garden. Thousands of rhododendrons and decorative plants blend with century-old Douglas firs, ferns and wildflowers, comprising a dynamic and scenic nature center. Locals explore its 80 acres via the winding, shaded hiking trails, namely the Ridgeline Trail. Hikers strap on their shoes and venture points of the 12-mile hillside trail, catching peeks of the Eugene skyline at varying overlooks. There's three additional city-owned parks in Fairmount that locals often walk to. Amenities are limited at Washburne and Mission City Parks, so their open green spaces are popular spots for picnics and dog walks. And Fairmount Park features a playground and a basketball court.

Exploring the local bistros and markets along 19th Avenue
"Part of this area's charm is its walkability to some quaint restaurants and pubs," Moshofsky says. Locals rave over the brisket hash from Agate Alley Bistro, the daily ravioli special at Beppe and Gianni's Trattoria and the voodoo chicken strips from McMenamins East 19th Street Café. These three eateries are also on East 19th Avenue, which means they're a leisurely stroll from Fairmount. Early risers often walk to Studio One Café for a hearty breakfast plate. And Prince Puckler's Gourmet Ice Cream has scooped 40-plus flavors from its East 19th Avenue location since 1975. If locals want to grab a few essentials quickly, Tom's Market is a small convenience store at the corner of East 19th and Agate Street. But Safeway is under 2 miles west for additional grocery needs.
