About Eunice, LA

The Prairie Cajun Capital of Louisiana

Crawfish farms and grasslands paint the landscape surrounding Eunice, a Louisiana city 40 miles from Lafayette. Tourism is a big draw in the “prairie Cajun capital” of Louisiana, where the Cajun Music Hall of Fame and Museum sets the tone with artifacts and memorabilia dedicated to the sounds that shaped the region. For locals, a sluggish job market has driven down the population. The city’s remaining 9,000 residents benefit from a hearty dose of Cajun culture and wallet-friendly home prices.

Regional culture thrives at the Prairie Acadian Cultural Center and the Eunice Depot Museum, which hosts gatherings encouraging residents to keep the French language alive. Professional and amateur chefs vie for the crown in the World Championship Crawfish Étouffée Cook-off, held in March. The biggest annual event is the Cajun Mardi Gras Festival, a five-day celebration highlighted by street dancing, live music, cultural demonstrations and Cajun cuisine. For years, the Liberty Theatre hosted a live radio and TV show on Saturday nights, but the landmark space is currently undergoing extensive renovations slated for completion sometime in 2025.
