Eunice offers open desert skies and a small town atmosphere

Oil fields surround Eunice, a Southeast New Mexico city that sits under clear desert skies, about 6 miles from the Texas border. “It’s a rural area, and a very small community […] They have a little grocery store. They’ve got a little post office, but they don’t even deliver mail to your house. You have to have a postal box. That’s how small it is,” says Martha Thomas, a qualifying broker with Casa Oasis Realty who has over 16 years of experience.

Indoor recreation centers in Eunice and parks with sports facilities

Near Main Street, a paved path loops around Marshall Memorial Park, which includes basketball courts, a playground and a baseball field. The park is home to the Eunice Aquatic Facility with waterslides and a lap pool. The Eunice Youth Center features game rooms and basketball courts for students in grades 2 through 12. Additionally, the Eunice Activity Center, which serves students in grades 8 through 12, offers indoor recreation and sports facilities. Coyote Crossing Golf Club is at the Eunice Municipal Golf Course on New Mexico Highway 176. It is a public course that spans nine holes. Stephens Park & Lake is nearby with a fishing area and a fenced-in basketball court.

Adobe, stucco and brick homes in a region with a higher wildfire risk

Ranch-style homes and traditionally influenced, single-families are common, and many feature stucco, adobe or brick siding. Prices range from about $110,000 to $350,000. Mobile and manufactured homes are also in the area, with prices ranging from around $100,000 to $220,000. The region’s excessive heat and dry conditions may result in elevated wildfire risks; as such, residents are encouraged to research and select insurance plans accordingly.

Schools in Eunice and career training at New Mexico Junior College

Eunice Public Schools district serves the area and offers school choice via out-of-district transfers or open enrollment, contingent on capacity and approval. Schools include Mettie Jordan Elementary School and Caton Middle School, both of which earn C grades from Niche. Eunice High School scores a B-minus overall. Juniors and seniors can apply for the school’s Advanced Careers and Technology Academy (ACT Academy), a post-secondary career training center at New Mexico Junior College.

Mexican cuisine on Main Street, a steakhouse and stores in Hobbs

Many restaurants with Mexican cuisine are on Main Street in central Eunice, including Diana’s Cafe, which occasionally has a buffet, and Tripitas del Parque. The Outlaw Grill steakhouse has some southern New Mexican fare. A block over, Lowe’s Market sells groceries. In Hobbs, Broadway Street has boot stores and boutiques, and Turner Street is home to shopping centers with national retailers.

A highway to Hobbs and an economy fueled by the energy sector

New Mexico Highway 18 connects the area to Hobbs, which includes the Covenant Health Hobbs Hospital, about 30 miles away. The Lea County Regional Airport is also located in Hobbs and is approximately a 25-mile drive. Texas & New Mexico Railway runs through the eastern region, carrying petroleum products and other oilfield commodities. “There’s a lot of oil field activity going on over there. The only thing that will bring you into [Eunice] is if you’re working around that area or close to Odessa, Texas, and you’re looking for a place to stay… There’s really not a whole lot to do there or any other jobs, unless you go work at the Urenco,” Thomas says regarding the enrichment facility on New Mexico Highway 176, near the Texas border.
