Bayside living south of Eureka
Residents of Fields Landing come home to the sound of waves lapping against the shoreline and boats clanging in the harbor. This tiny neighborhood sits along the deep blue waters of Humboldt Bay, just south of Eureka in the remote regions of Northern California. It was originally a whaling and fishing port but has since transitioned away from those industries. “Fishermen would bring their boats in, and people could buy right off the boat,” says Larry Doss, owner and broker at Ming Tree Realty, who is a longtime area resident. “Back then, it was mostly fishermen and dockworkers living there. Today it’s more of a bedroom community for Eureka.”
Beaches, boat ramps and Humboldt Botanical Garden
The Jimmy Smith Fields Landing Boat Launching Facility sits just a short walk or drive from many homes where residents can kick off a day of fishing and relaxing on the bay. Humboldt Botanical Garden is a few miles south of the neighborhood. At 45 acres, the garden features an array of native plants, earth sculptures and walking trails where visitors are greeted by lush floral blooms. King Salmon Beach offers sandy strolls with views of the surrounding landscape. Further inland, there are plenty of opportunities for hiking in Humboldt County’s storied redwood forests.

Most of these homes date back to the early 20th century, although there are some that have been built more recently. Most have been well-maintained by their owners, but some others may need significant improvements.
