A blue-collar community just outside Eureka, California
Myrtletown is a small, unincorporated town that borders the eastern edge of Eureka where residential streets give way to coastal wetlands and rural farms. Realtor Lauren Smith, owner of The Key Real Estate Group, says it’s safe, walkable community and its home prices are relatively low for the area. “It’s very blue collar because the homes are on the affordable side. The people that make the county turn live there,” says Smith, a longtime county resident.
The community is situated in Humboldt County near the shores of Humboldt Bay. Humboldt County was once known for its logging, fishing and cannabis industries, which powered the local economy for many years, but much of that work has dried up. These days, the region has begun transitioning into a tourism economy because of its abundant natural scenery and national parks.
Redwood Acres Raceway
The smell of burning rubber and the roar of stockcar engines can be heard from Redwood Acres Raceway, a longstanding racetrack at the neighborhood’s southern edge. Established in 1947, it’s played host to hundreds of races, including some featuring future NASCAR greats like Rick Carelli and Kevin Harvick. The track has been a major part of the community since its inception over 70 years ago.
Independent breweries are close by
Myrtletown is mostly residential, but there are several breweries in the neighborhood where residents can post up with a cold beverage. Redwood Curtain Brewing Company has a taproom for tasting and food trucks parked outside where patrons can grab a bite to eat. Those looking for a sweeter beverage might try Humboldt Cider Company, another local tasting room with a variety of made-on-site cider. Just west of Myrtletown is Ramone’s Bakery & Café, a popular spot that’s been serving Eureka since 1981. Decadent cakes, flaky pastries and hearty breakfast sandwiches are all on the menu here. Safeway and Walgreens are less than a mile away for groceries and everyday essentials. Eureka the Pentecostal Church is at the northwestern end of the neighborhood.

Wetlands, forests and nearby parks
Myrtletown is nearly surrounded by natural scenery with sprawling forestland to the south, creeks and wetlands to the east and the wide expanse of Humboldt Bay at its northern edge. Residents can walk the trails at McKay Community Forest, a 1,200-acre forest full of Douglas firs, oaks and redwoods that skirts the southern end of the neighborhood. There’s also Freshwater Farms Reserve, an estuary conservation area with a nature trail that cuts through the swamps near the Bayshore. Within around 30 miles, residents can reach sprawling national and state parks that have put Humboldt County on the map for outdoor recreation.

Solidly rated schools
Lafayette Elementary School is in the heart of Myrtletown and is walking and biking distance from many homes. It earns a C-rating from Niche. “Lafayette has a great reputation. It’s one of the better schools around,” Smith says. Students can move on to C-plus-rated Catherine L. Zane Middle School, followed by B-rated Eureka High School. Eureka High is a haven for athletes — the school opened a brand-new campus gym in 2023 with updated athletic courts, a fitness center and bleachers that can seat up to 1,200 people.

Easy access to the Pacific Coast Highway
The neighborhood is about 2 miles from State Route 101, also known as the Pacific Coast Highway. This regional commuter corridor makes for an easy drive to coastal towns like Arcata and Fortuna. Providence St. Joseph Hospital Eureka is about a mile west of Myrtletown. It’s the largest hospital system in Humboldt County and the county’s second largest employer.
Foggy, chilly weather
The weather along the coast is typically foggy and chilly, with more rainfall than central and southern California. Fog barrels in from the ocean in the morning and burns off in the early afternoon. Temperatures rarely top 70 degrees and almost never dips below 40 degrees.
