Rural living south of Eureka on the Pacific coast
Pine Hills is a rural community tucked away in the forested hillsides south of Eureka, just a few miles off the chilly Pacific coastline. It’s made up of several residential communities, including Ridgewood and Elk River, situated on quiet streets peppered with towering pine and redwood trees. “You can have redwoods in your front yard. You don’t get that anywhere else. And the weather’s great. It’s in the mid-60s in the summer, but you get a little more sun than if you’re right along the coast,” says Realtor Malachi Herrera of Ming Tree Realty, a longtime area resident.
Hike through the redwoods
Pine Hills is just north of the Headwaters Forest Reserve, a 7,500-acre woodland that serves as a habitat for old-growth redwoods and several endangered species of birds, like the northern spotted owl. Trailheads into the forest include Elk River Trailhead, a former logging road that twists across the redwood-covered landscape. There are also trails that extend from residential streets into the forests that border the neighborhood's eastern edge, such as the Northridge Trail Loop. Plus, Humboldt Bay to the west of the neighborhood offers trails along the waterfront. Avid golfers can get up for an early morning tee time at Eureka Municipal Golf Course, an 18-hole public course with fairways that wind through pristine wilderness.
