Pine Hills
Hike through the redwoods
Pine Hills is just north of the Headwaters Forest Reserve, a 7,500-acre woodland that serves as a habitat for old-growth redwoods and several endangered species of birds, like the northern spotted owl. Trailheads into the forest include Elk River Trailhead, a former logging road that twists across the redwood-covered landscape. There are also trails that extend from residential streets into the forests that border the neighborhood's eastern edge, such as the Northridge Trail Loop. Plus, Humboldt Bay to the west of the neighborhood offers trails along the waterfront. Avid golfers can get up for an early morning tee time at Eureka Municipal Golf Course, an 18-hole public course with fairways that wind through pristine wilderness. An eclectic mix of homes in Humboldt County forests
Pine Hills offers an eclectic mix of homes in a rural and exurban setting. It runs the gamut from midcentury ranch-style homes to custom-built properties and luxury homes to farmhouses. Some parts of the community, like Elk River, feel more rural and agricultural, while neighborhoods like Ridgewood have homes that are close together on tree-lined streets. The one feature they all share is their proximity to boundless open space and lush natural scenery. Prices for smaller, rural homes range from around $350,000 to $500,000. Larger, newer homes sell for between $500,000 to $700,000.Shopping and dining in Cutten
Pine Hills residents head to nearby Cutten, a suburb of Eureka, for shopping and dining. It’s home to Babe’s Pizza & Pasta, a locally owned restaurant that’s been serving up Italian staples since 1991. There’s also The Cutten Chalet, a breakfast, brunch and lunch diner where early birds sit down for pancakes, eggs and biscuits. Just up the street is Murphy’s Market, a one-stop shop for groceries and everyday essentials. For everything else, it’s about 5 miles to Eureka, where locals can shop at WinCo Foods, Target, North Coast Co-op and Costco.Public schools and a community college
Young students can attend Cutten Elementary School, which earns a B-plus rating from Niche. Students can move on to C-rated Winship Middle School, and then B-rated Eureka High School. The high school opened a new campus gym in 2023 with updated athletic courts, a fitness center and bleachers that can seat up to 1,200 people. College of the Redwoods, a community college, is just south of Pine Hills.Easy access to the Pacific Coast Highway
State Route 101, also known as the Pacific Coast Highway, is near the western edge of Pine Hills, making it ideal for commuters. The highway connects with the cities of Eureka and Arcata to the north and Fortuna to the south. The California Redwood Coast-Humbolt County Airport is about 20 miles north of the neighborhood, and the nearest hospital is Providence St. Joseph Hospital in Eureka.Coastal weather
The weather along the Northern California coastline is foggy, chilly and experiences more rainfall than central and southern California. Fog billows in from the ocean in the morning and burns off by late morning or early afternoon, while temperatures usually range from 40 degrees to 65 degrees all year-round.
