Eutaw is a rural community where residents support each other
Eutaw residents keep life simple. Nearly 3,000 people call the rural Greene County city home, and they take advantage of its outdoor activities and location near Tuscaloosa. The community’s businesses support residents in any way they can. For Deysi Juan, owner of King & Queen Cantina, that means providing meals to local schools and residents who have fallen on hard times. “We are based on family, and we consider everyone here a part of that,” Juan says. “We give them the best we can. It feels like home.”
Ranch-style and custom homes on large lots
Older ranch-style houses can range from $35,000 to $175,000. Custom homes often run from $285,000 to $385,000. Properties commonly sit on lots of an acre or more, and some come with carports. The city’s asphalt streets are narrow and well-paved and feature mature trees. Main roads usually have sidewalks, but some residential streets do not. Drivers often park their cars along the side of the road. Homes in Eutaw do not hit the market often. When they do, they tend to stay on it for a while, selling after around 100 days — about double the national average.
Greene County High students can take career-focused classes
Students are served by Greene County Schools. Prekindergarten through third-grade students can attend Eutaw Primary School, which has a C Niche rating. Robert Brown Middle School, for grades 4-8, holds a C-minus score. Greene County High School offers career-focused classes like entrepreneurship and robotics. It earns a C-plus.
Fishing, camping and golfing and Greene County Entertainment casino
The nearby Black Warrior River is popular with anglers, who can catch bluegill, bass and crappie, among other fish. Riverfront public use areas like Finches Ferry have boat ramps for a $5 daily fee, while Jennings Ferry Park has campgrounds. The Greene County Courthouse Square Historic District has a fountain and a veterans memorial. Everhope, an estate constructed in 1852, hosts tours and special events. The Greene County Golf Course has been open since 1970 and has nine holes.
Eutaw is around 5 miles from Greene County Entertainment, a casino that hosts events like spades tournaments. The city hosts an annual Community Fun Day, which mixes food vendors with games. St. Stephen's Episcopal Church was constructed in 1914 and still uses furniture from that time.
King & Queen Cantina serves the community, plus chain restaurants
King & Queen Cantina puts a twist on traditional Mexican cuisine with dishes like its Pineapple Bowl, where grilled meats, rice and cheese sit inside a cut-in-half pineapple. Despite its intricate menu, the restaurant remains flexible with ingredients. Juan says it takes special requests to accommodate people’s diets and allergies. “Eutaw needed a place to eat and chill, something close to home,” Juan says. “We want to be that place.”
Cajun Cafe serves Louisiana-inspired food like gumbo and po’boys. Chain eateries like Godfather’s Pizza and Hardee’s are near the city along Alabama State Route 14. Piggly Wiggly has groceries, and Dollar General and Family Dollar carry essentials.
Get on a major highway toward Tuscaloosa with little traffic
U.S. routes 43 and 11 cut through the city center. Eutaw is around 35 miles from Tuscaloosa and about 90 miles from Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport. “There’s only traffic when there’s an accident,” Juan says. Tornadoes can impact the area. In 2022-2023, three tornadoes hit the area within nine months, damaging more than 30 homes in total.
