North Country Club is part of Evansville’s North Park community
North Country Club is one of several developments by Guthrie May, an Evansville native who set out to solve the housing shortage in the area after World War II. He is responsible for over 6,000 affordable homes. Gayl Killough, President of the North Country Club Neighborhood Association, says her parents were among the first to buy a house in the neighborhood. “They actually chose it off of a model, but then they had to wait at least six months to be able to get the house,” she says. May worked with developers to start North Park Shopping Center and the Holy Redeemer Church. “They literally planned a neighborhood in a very strategic way,” Killough says. “I think that’s one reason North Park still is successful today. It was planned as a community, with shopping, with churches, with schools.”

Homes from the mid-20th century fill the neighborhood
A stroll along North Country Club’s sidewalks takes people past grassy lawns surrounded by trees. Long driveways lead to one-car garages that are often detached. Most of the mid-20th-century properties in the area are ranch-style homes with vinyl siding, with some split levels and traditional houses with colonial influences mixed in. Prices generally range from $145,000 to $275,000, although investment properties can cost as little as $75,000. According to FEMA, the neighborhood has a relatively high risk of tornadoes.

Nearby North Park offers shopping, dining and entertainment
North Park is about 1 mile away. “I can see North Park from where I live,” Killough says. Built in 1957, it is the first major shopping center in the city. Today, stores include Target, Dollar General and Ruler Foods. While there are some national chain establishments like Dunkin’, most restaurants in the area are locally owned. El Patron Mexican Restaurant is home to the two-foot-long Anaconda Burrito; G.D. Ritzy’s serves American fare like chili and hamburgers. Showplace Cinemas is also in the shopping center, so residents can catch a movie after dinner. There are more dining options in Downtown Evansville, about 4 miles away, including COMFORT by the Cross-Eyed Cricket, where the menu is filled with culinary twists on homestyle classics. Walmart and Home Depot are about a 7-mile drive.

Students attend Evansville schools, and Ivy Tech is nearby
North Country Club is part of the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation. “It’s an excellent school district,” Killough says. Highland Elementary School earns a B-plus from Niche. Thompkins Middle School and Central High School both receive a B. Founded in 1854, Central High is the oldest continuously operating public high school west of the Allegheny Mountains. It is home to the Academy of Science and Medicine, a four-year program where students can get hands-on experiences shadowing professionals like veterinarians, doctors and pharmacists. Ivy Tech Community College, which offers over 70 associate degrees and certificate programs, is about 1 mile away.
The student population of Highland Elementary School is 894 and the school serves K-5.

Residents head to Igleheart Park and the North Park library for recreation
A short walk from North Country Club’s homes, Igleheart Park features a basketball court, softball fields and an accessible playground. “That’s more of a recreational area than a park,” Killough says. The North Woods Nature Trails, which have 2 miles of forested walking paths, neighbor the athletic fields. Nearby, the North Park branch of the Evansville Vanderburgh Public Library resides in a building designed after a National Park lodge that includes a patio. Besides having access to an extensive catalog of books, patrons can join book and crafting clubs.
