STAR offers urban living near Downtown Evansville and riverside recreation
STAR is a small community just north of Evansville’s downtown district and the Ohio River. More than half the neighborhood is zoned for industrial use, while about one-fifth is made up of older homes on quiet residential streets. It’s also walking and biking distance from downtown restaurants, riverside parks and the city’s expansive trail networks. “It’s an older neighborhood, but we’ve got a couple of big parks and there are bus lines that will take you downtown. It’s only a mile away,” says William “Bud” Goodsen, President of the STAR Neighborhood Association and a longtime resident. STAR stands for Sharing the Area's Resources.
The neighborhood features older properties at a relatively affordable price
Homes are situated on a flat street grid that extends out from the downtown district toward the city’s northern edge. Homes were primarily built between the early 1900s and 1950 in a mix of Traditional, bungalow and Craftsman styles. Some have been well-maintained and renovated while others have not. Prices range from around $50,000 to $150,000, putting them below the city’s median home price. About 70% of residents are renters. “There used to be a lot more homeowners, but a lot of the older people have died or moved on. It’s mostly renters now,” Goodsen says. The neighborhood has a CAP Index Crime Score of 8 out of 10, higher than the national average of 4.
Residents can walk to riverside trails and community parks
Several public parks are available nearby, the largest of which is Willard Library Park. The park takes up an entire city block at the corner of First Avenue and State Road 62, and features formal gardens, tall stands of trees and plenty of paths and benches. It’s home to the historic Willard Library, a private donation library housed in a grand Gothic Revival building known for its tall tower, red brick and white stone exterior and its ornamental detailing. “It’s a fantastic old building,” Goodsen says. The city’s sprawling riverside trails and green spaces are also close. Lamasco Park sits alongside Pigeon Creek, less than a mile away. It has a skatepark, a baseball diamond and an entrance point to the Pigeon Creek Greenway trail, a 7-mile trail that leads to the Ohio River.
Local restaurants, nearby grocery stores and downtown shopping
There are a handful of restaurants within walking distance for STAR residents. Big Top Drive-In is a longstanding burger and shake shack that looks almost exactly as it did when it opened its doors in 1948. It stands out with its colorful décor and signage of a clown holding a giant ice cream cone. Also nearby is Hacienda, a popular Mexican joint serving Central American standards. Groceries and everyday goods are found at Family Dollar and Grocery Outlet. For everything else, it’s a short walk, drive or bus ride to the downtown district, where residents will find many small businesses, shops and eateries.
Students attend schools in the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation
Students in the north side of the neighborhood may attend Cedar Hall Community School while those in the south side attend Lincoln School. Both serve kindergarten through eighth-grade students and get C ratings from Niche. The last four years are spent at B-rated Central High School. Established in 1854, it’s the oldest continuously operating public high school west of the Alleghany Mountains. Students have a wide range of education options, whether it’s learning about the medical field at the Academy of Science and Medicine or a specialized trade at the Southern Indiana Career and Technical Center.
STAR is a walkable neighborhood with easy access to local commuter routes
The neighborhood is walkable, with sidewalks skirting the edges of most of its streets. State Route 62 runs along the neighborhood’s southern edge, easing commute times for those who need to get around the city. It’s also very close to the Ohio River Scenic Byway that meanders along the water’s edge before connecting with Interstate 69. Those who use public transportation can catch the bus on Fulton Avenue. Deaconess Midtown Hospital is the nearest medical center, less than a mile away.
