Evansville is a quiet suburb northeast of Casper, Wyoming

Evansville is a suburban town that’s tucked away along a bend in the North Platte River, just north of Casper. Residents live on quiet streets near the central Wyoming countryside but can still get into town in less than 10 minutes. It's also adjacent to several large industrial areas situated along the river, including some oil and gas companies. “They recently built a new subdivision in Evansville, and that’s been a huge boost for the town. It’s also just outside East Casper where there’s a lot of shopping, dining and bars,” says Realtor Donna Martensen of Real Estate Leaders, a longtime Casper resident.

The town offers a wide range of housing options

The town got its start in the early 20th century when a rancher began selling off his land for housing during an early oil boom. Because of this, some streets are lined with century-old cottages and bungalows, but midcentury ranch-style homes, split-levels and Traditional homes can also be found here. The northern edge of town, near the river, offers a wealth of new construction, including homes built in the last 10 years. Home prices range from about $300,000 to $400,000. Manufactured homes are also available for those looking for a more affordable option. “One of the big draws for Evansville is that it’s eligible for rural development financing, so you can put zero dollars down on a home. It’s great for first-time homebuyers,” Martensen says.

Riverside parks and waterfront destinations are close to home

Reshaw Park sits along the banks of the North Platte River, offering pleasant views of the water and the rolling prairies beyond it. The park has a brand-new playground and a scenic walking path that winds alongside the water’s edge. “There’s public access to the river, which is great for fishing, floating or taking your canoe or kayak out,” Martensen says. Locals can also enjoy the outdoors at Stoneking Park, a small park with a playground that sits on a residential street. The Casper Speedway is just a few miles west of town. This half-mile dirt track hosts racing events every Friday night in the summertime. Evansville is within a short drive of popular river destinations like White Water Park, Platte River Trails and the Three Crowns Golf Club.

Evansville is at an increased risk for flooding and fires

Some neighborhoods are susceptible to flooding because of their proximity to the North Platte River. Springtime sees the most flooding, caused by snowmelt runoff from the Rocky Mountains. In addition to flooding, the region is at a high risk for wildfires. The Sheep Herder Hill Complex fire in 2012 burned many buildings in the area and some residents in the Casper area had to evacuate. Natrona County officials and local fire departments have implemented precautionary measures to help prevent wildfires.

Residents are just a short drive from East Casper shopping and dining

A handful of bars, restaurants and shops are found in Evansville. HQ Southern BBQ is a highly rated hole-in-the-wall that serves pulled pork, brisket, ribs and fixings. Dives like Taylor Sports & Spirits and Butch’s Bar are the place to be for happy hour drinks, pub fare and billiards. Major chains like Outback Steakhouse and Texas Roadhouse are also in the area. Walmart, Sam’s Club and The Home Depot are about a mile away in East Casper.

Students go to Natrona County Schools

Natrona County Schools offers school choice for county residents. Students can start their education close to home at Evansville Elementary School and Centennial Junior High School, both of which get B-minus ratings from Niche. The last four years can be spent at Kelly Walsh High School, which gets a B-plus. The school is well known for its championship-winning athletic programs and its annual, big-budget theatre productions.

Getting around Casper and beyond

Interstate 25 runs along Evansville’s southern edge, easing commute times for local travelers. It’s only 3 miles to downtown Casper and within 10 miles of the region’s oil fields, where many people work. For those who need public transportation, Casper Area Transit operates a bus line that travels between Evansville and Casper. It’s about 12 miles to the Casper/Natrona County International Airport, and about 3 miles to the Banner Wyoming Medical Center.
