Evergreen is a rural city known for its natural beauty and its sausage
Evergreen is known as the “Emerald City” for its natural beauty, and in 2017, the city council passed a tongue-in-cheek resolution naming the community the “Bigfoot Capital of Alabama” after a stretch of reported sightings. But the region’s real crown jewel is not its trees or a mythic creature, but a sausage. The city has been the home of Conecuh Sausage since 1947, with a processing plant and a retail store that lets visitors sample the hickory-smoked delicacy. It hosts a festival dedicated to the meat each year. When not operating the grill, residents spent time together at the area’s parks, businesses and restaurants. “It’s a small town with a big heart,” says Susan Coleman, an agent with Outlaw Realty and an Evergreen resident. “It’s a strong community. There is so much local support.”

Colonial Revival homes on large lots for below-median prices
Most residents live near the city center in midcentury houses, with a smattering of homes across the larger rural region. Many are single-story and carry a Colonial Revival influence. The median sale price is $125,000, well below the national median. “You can get a nice house and some acreage for the same price as a tiny lot in a nearby town,” Coleman says. “And it seems like there are nice produce gardens on every corner. Tomatoes, squash, corn and cucumbers are all common.” The area’s asphalt streets are narrow and can feature sidewalks, especially main thoroughfares. Residential roads do not have a distinct pattern; they snake through the city in different directions. Yards typically have bushes and small trees, and mailboxes sit on wood or plastic posts.

City festivals center around food and fun activities
The Conecuh County Sausage Festival is held each fall at Evergreen Regional Airport/Middleton Field. It blends food vendors with arts and crafts, a car show and a children’s play area. The Collard Green Festival brings cook-offs and other activities to the city each spring.
Access to major highways, but with a chance of hurricanes
U.S. Highway 31 cuts through the city center, and Interstate 65 does the same a few miles north. Montgomery Regional Airport is around 75 miles away, and Downtown Montgomery is close to an 80-mile drive. Coleman says inclement weather, such as hurricanes and tornadoes, can impact the region, but the effects are usually mild, even from larger storms, because of Evergreen’s inland position.
