Beachfront property and Pacific views 20 miles west of Honolulu
Sandy beaches and tropical weather await the residents of Ewa Beach. Situated on the island of O’ahu, about 20 miles west of Honolulu, it has a mix of residential streets, a handful of restaurants and several public schools. It’s within a 30 minute-drive of several of the island’s major military installations, making it a popular place for military families. “There’s a lot of military turnover in Ewa Beach, but it still has a very neighborly, community feel. It’s the kind of place where kids are walking and biking to school. It’s very safe,” says Realtor Courtney Williams Hawaii Pacific Realty Group, who has lived in Ewa Beach for about 5 years.
A mix of midcentury-era homes perched near the oceanside
Homes in Ewa Beach were primarily built in the 1950’s, 60’s and 70’s. Cottages, Traditional homes and ranch styles are the most common home designs here. Its narrow roads are dotted with towering pine trees and beach scrub that catch the salty air coming off the ocean. Beachfront properties, which fetch the highest prices, have backyards that open to the Pacific shoreline. Home prices range from as low as $750,000 for a fixer-upper to as high as $2.5 million for a spacious home on the beach. “You get a little more house for your money here,” Williams says, noting the median price on the island is around $1.2 million. For those seeking a more affordable option, there are some apartments and condos available.
Public beaches, parks and the Ewa Beach Golf Club
Ewa Beach is home to Pu’uloa Beach Park, a popular spot for sunbathing, swimming and taking in gorgeous sunsets over the Pacific and views of the Honolulu skyline. The park also has a playground, basketball courts and public restrooms. It’s one of three public beaches that are within walking distance for many Ewa Beach residents. Avid golfers can set up a tee time at Ewa Beach Golf Club, where pristine greens sit in the shadow of the Waianae Mountain Range. Outdoor recreation is a major draw for Ewa Beach residents. With average winter temperatures in the low-60’s and summer highs in the upper-80’s, it’s t-shirt season all-year-round. “It hardly ever rains on this side of the island. It’s hot and dry compared to the other side of O'ahu, which gets a lot more rain,” Williams says.
Well-rated public schools are close to home for Ewa Beach residents
Students in Ewa Beach attend well-rated public schools in the Hawaiian Department of Education’s school district, the only district in the state. The district gets an A-minus rating from Niche and serves more than 150,000 students across more than 250 public schools. Students in Ewa Beach can start at Pohakea Elementary School before moving on to ‘Ilima Intermediate School and James Campbell High School. All three schools get B ratings. The high school offers an International Baccalaureate program, a wide range of AP courses and dual enrollment programs with local community colleges.
Fort Weaver Road has an array of local and chain restaurants
Restaurants can be found along Fort Weaver Road, with everything from popular local eateries to fast-food chains. Korean Style Kitchen is the go-to for breakfast and brunch classics, while Shiro’s Saimin Haven is known for its sumptuous noodle dishes. Vietnamese, Thai, Mexican and Japanese restaurants also make an appearance. Safeway is the nearest grocery store, located just north of Ewa Beach. For everything else, it’s about a 30-minute drive into Downtown Honolulu, where residents will find a veritable melting pot of cuisines and cultures.
Getting around the island via highway or bus
Ewa Beach is about 6 miles from Interstate H-1, the island’s major commuter corridor. The community is about 20 miles from Honolulu, the cultural and employment hub of O’ahu and the most populous city in Hawaii. Those who need public transportation can catch the bus along Ewa Beach’s busier roadways, including Fort Weaver Road, North Road and Kuhina Street. Residents can catch an international flight at Danile K. Inouye International Airport, about 17 miles away.
