An expanding economy

Ewing Township was one of the first suburbs of the City of Trenton, and the Prospect neighborhood is right on the city border. Ewing was a hub of industrial activity during the 20th century. Globalization saw the departure of factories that were then repurposed into municipal buildings. New tax incentives were passed in the new millennium, and in 2013, cleaning product manufacturer Church & Dwight Co. Inc. relocated its headquarters to Ewing. Biotech company Celator Pharmaceuticals came next, followed by others. Ewing's population is growing steadily as its economy expands.

Fixer-uppers to grand Victorians

Fareeda Stokes, Owner and Broker of Record of Harkes Realty & Associates, says, "Prospect is in a stage of revitalization." The wide variety of properties on the market reflects that in-between place. Investors are buying up Greek revival row houses and Victorian duplexes for under $100,000, renovating and leasing them. But there is also a large inventory of historic homes with original details that only need a little work. Two-to-four-bedroom prewar colonial row houses are selling for under $250,000. Detached, renovated Victorian homes from the 19th century with five bedrooms are listed for under $400,000.

A farmers market or an Aldi

Olden Avenue, where most of the commerce in this neighborhood exists, cuts across the middle of Prospect. Strip malls house many businesses, including fast-food spots such as Sonic and Taco Bell and local sit-down restaurants like Mamma Flora's Trattoria. A ShopRite and Aldi serve as neighborhood grocers, and there's a Dollar General nearby. Down the road where Olden Ave meets the City of Trenton, patrons will find a Harbor Freight and New Jersey's longest-running farmers market, the Trenton Farmers Market, an indoor and outdoor complex where New Jersey farmers have been selling their wares year-round since 1939.

Private and public options for schooling

The vast and well-appointed campus of the private Catholic Notre Dame High School occupies several acres on the southeastern side of Prospect. In addition to its multimillion-dollar campus, the school boasts a 90% and above passing rate for Advanced Placement Exams, which is 30% higher than the state average. The Trenton Public School District has performed poorly in recent history. Niche, the school rankings website, gave Gregory Elementary School a D-plus grade. Trenton STEM-to-Civics Charter School, a sixth to 12th grade institution, received a C-plus.

A stone's throw from the river

Moody Park is the largest in Prospect, with several courts and fields for sports, indoor batting cages and a large playground recreation area. Aside from a couple of unofficial green spaces and greenways in Prospect, there are no other parks in the area. A few blocks west, however, residents will find Cadwalader Park, an expansive wooded green space on the bluffs of the Delaware River. A paved trail along the river is also frequented by runners and bikers. The Capital Area YMCA is the place for winter recreation around here.

Take the New Jersey Transit

The 608 bus runs along the riverside part of Prospect and will take riders to the Trenton Transit Center under a mile east. Riders can reach Philadelphia in next-door Pennsylvania in 45 minutes on the NJ Transit Light Rail River Line. The Northeast Corridor line will take riders north to Penn Station in New York City in an hour and a half.

GreatSchools: The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
