Lakefront living with a charming downtown in Excelsior

While it’s less than 20 miles from Minneapolis, the waterfront city of Excelsior feels like it’s a world away. The expansive Lake Minnetonka is at the heart of the community, with lakeside homes and seemingly endless recreation. Most residents are a short walk from a historic downtown with locally owned boutiques, cafes and restaurants. Highly rated schools and events like the annual Apple Days only add to the area’s charm.

Historic homes on smaller lots add to the city's character

Homes from the early 1900s, like Dutch Colonials and National Folk styles, set Excelsior apart from other Twin Cities suburbs. You can see the influence of older architecture in many newer homes and townhouses. There are also some mid-20th-century ranch-style houses and split-levels. Prices start in the low $400,000s and can exceed $2 million as you get closer to the water. The median single-family home price is in the mid-$800,000s, which is less expensive than in Shorewood or Tonka Bay. Part of this is due to Excelsior’s residential areas having a slightly more urban design, according to Julia Mullin, the city’s community development director. “The parcels are smaller,” she says. “There are sidewalks, front porches and patterns to the homes. That kind of character is very distinctive.”

Excelsior Commons overlooks Lake Minnetonka

Excelsior Commons overlooks Lake Minnetonka and has amenities like playgrounds, baseball fields and a bandshell that regularly hosts events. A public beach is at the tip of the park, offering a space to swim or lie out on the sandy shores. At the other end of the Commons is the Port of Excelsior, which has docks and public excursion vessels. Cyclists, walkers and runners can be seen on the 9-mile-long Lake Minnetonka Regional Trail.

Water Street anchors Excelsior's walkable downtown

Local shops, restaurants and cafes fill the buildings along Water Street. “Excelsior is only one square mile, so we’re small, but we pack a big punch,” Mullin says. “We’ve got everything downtown, which is lined with historic properties. It’s very walkable and enjoyable.” You can:

  • Eat dinner on the wharf at Maynards
  • Pick out your next read at Excelsior Bay Books
  • Meet friends for a margarita and a meal at Lago Tacos
  • Shop from dozens of local artists at Golden Rule Gallery
  • Grab a cup of coffee and listen to the live music at 318 Cafe
There’s even a Kowalski’s Market downtown, so you can pick up some groceries before you walk home.

Community events include juried art shows and Apple Days

Excelsior has a full calendar of events, most of which are held downtown or at the Commons. Some of the more popular events include:

  • Concerts in the Commons, a free concert series that runs from June through August
  • Art on the Lake, a juried festival with over 150 artists along Water Street every June
  • Lake Minnetonka 4th of July, the only public fireworks show on the lake
  • Apple Days, a September festival with apple pie contests and artist booths that started in 1935

Young students learn languages at Excelsior Elementary

Most families enroll in the Minnetonka Public School District, which earns an A-plus from Niche. Excelsior Elementary School, which also receives an A-plus, is located in the city and offers language immersion programs in Spanish and Chinese that start in kindergarten.

Downtown Minneapolis is less than 20 miles away

Highway 7 runs through Excelsior and is one of the fastest routes into downtown Minneapolis, less than 20 miles (30 minutes) away. Downtown Saint Paul is about a 25-mile (50-minute) drive. Public transportation is available through Metro Transit and SouthWest Transit. Cycling is another option, especially for shorter trips, thanks to an extensive trail system that is regularly plowed during the winter.
