Keystone College town and former factory town
Factoryville is a small borough in the mountains of northeastern Pennsylvania, about 14 miles from Scranton. “It’s a charming little town and very affordable. It’s close to shopping, but it has a rural feel,” says Sarah Cremer, broker and owner of Bluestone Realty Group, LLC, who has sold several homes in the area. The borough earned its name from a textile factory that once operated in town. Today, it is home to Keystone College and about 1,000 residents. Cars are parked along the narrow, two-lane streets of downtown, which are flanked by raised sidewalks. There are few shops and restaurants in town, so locals can enjoy hiking and biking the nearby trails or drive into Scranton for city amenities.
A quiet housing market in Factoryville
Homes have recently sold from around $150,000 to $250,000, but only a few houses are on the market in Factoryville. “Inventory is low right now all over Lackawanna County. The market is just quieter than it was a year ago,” Cremer says. “Places in downtown Factoryville are mostly older. Some were built in the late 1800s, but outside of town, they were built mainly in the 60s or 70s, and they have bigger lots.” Along College Street, two-story Foursquare residences with large front porches face the sidewalks. In contrast, one might find more ranch and log cabin-style dwellings set back from the road along Lithia Valley Road and up Mathewson Terrace.

The Bluebird Diner II serves everything from patty melts to coconut shrimp and is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner six days a week. Across the street from Keystone College is a Steak n Shake, a nationwide chain serving 1950s-inspired diner food. “Factoryville is also close to downtown Scranton, and it’s easy to get there,” Cremer says. The Viewmont Mall in Scranton is about 11 miles southeast, offering access to big-box stores and more restaurant options. There is no grocery store in town, but in Chinchilla, about 7 miles southeast, there is a Weis Markets grocery store and The Fresh Grocer.

Aspiring baseball greats can practice pitching at Christy Mathewson Park, which has a baseball field and some playground equipment along Tunkhannock Creek. “Hiking and biking are popular; residents of Factoryville are close to many outdoor activities,” Cremer says. There are two popular trails near downtown: Trolley Trail, which offers chances for birding and biking, and Keystone College Trail, a 3-mile loop where hikers can bring their leashed dogs. Lackawanna State Park, centered around a nearly 200-acre lake, is about 5 miles east of town as well.
