Older bungalows and new condos near commercial areas
Gridded residential streets are set just off the commercial corridors that run through Grasmere. These have early-to-mid 20th-century bungalows, Cape Cods and Colonial Revivals, which sit on smaller lots. Houses don’t frequently go on the market, but when they do, they usually sell between $400,000 and $600,000. “We’re still having a real issue with inventory. Houses are still getting multiple offers when they hit the market,” Toner says. Along with the single-family houses, the neighborhood has some brick condo buildings that were built in the early 2000s. These are usually priced between $500,000 and $800,000.Public green spaces and beaches in Fairfield
Grasmere doesn’t have a lot of green space, but locals can work out at The Edge Fitness Clubs, a large gym with a variety of fitness equipment and group exercise classes. The neighborhood also isn’t far from Fairfield’s public parks and beaches. Under a mile from Grasmere is Gould Manor Park, a recreational area where little league teams practice on the ball fields and residents face off on the pickleball and tennis courts. A short nature trail curves past the park’s pond, which freezes in the winter, allowing ice skaters to glide across the pond. Grasmere is also a couple of miles from Fairfield’s coastline. At Jennings Beach, locals hang out on the sandy shores, splash in the soft waves of the Long Island Sound and grab treats from the snack shack. The beach also has rentable storage racks for kayaks, canoes and paddleboards. Near Jennings Beach, South Benson Marina boaters can dock larger watercraft, and anglers can fish from the pier. “Jennings Beach is where everyone will go for our big fireworks show on the 4th of July,” Toner says. “They set them off from the barge, so people will picnic and set up all along the beach.”Grasmere students attend highly-rated Fairfield schools
McKinley Elementary School, which has an A-minus rating from Niche, serves the neighborhood’s children. Afterward, students can progress to Tomlinson Middle School, which also scores an A-minus, and then Fairfield Ludlowe High School. The high school earns an A grade and offers introductory career courses for students to learn about culinary arts, child development or fashion business. There are also two private colleges in town; about 5,000 undergraduate students attend Fairfield University, and about 7,000 undergraduates study at Sacred Heart University.Greater Bridgeport buses, commuter trains and interstate access
While there aren’t sidewalks on fully residential roads, the residential streets quickly connect with thoroughfares lined with sidewalks and stores. Locals can often walk to grab lunch or to a bus stop operated by Greater Bridgeport Transit. Bus route 7 loops through Fairfield, stopping near the library and town hall before heading northeast to Bridgeport, where passengers can transfer lines to travel to the Bridgeport Hospital. Residents often commute out of town for work, heading to larger cities like Stamford or New York City on the Metro-North Railroad train. The New Haven line stops at the neighborhood’s Fairfield-Black Rock station, which has a commuter parking lot. Drivers can also merge onto Interstate 95 to drive 23 miles northeast to New Haven or 60 miles southwest to New York City.New Haven-style pizzerias and bars in Grasmere
Much of the neighborhood is made up of shopping plazas with well-known chains and popular local eateries. The trendy, modern coffee shop Wake-Cup-Coffee serves lattes and breakfast sandwiches made with pretzel buns. Hot dogs with a variety of toppings, fries and milkshakes are served at Super Duper Weenie, a casual American food shack. “Our pizza places are always popular since Connecticut likes to be the ‘pizza state,’” Toner says. Crispy New Haven-style slices are served alongside pasta dishes and cocktails at Sally’s Apizza. After work, people often grab drinks at Elicit Brewing Company, which has a sports bar vibe with TVs and pool tables, though there’s a more relaxed speakeasy that serves signature cocktails at the back. The brewery frequently hosts community events like movie screenings, pop-up markets, trivia nights and live musical performances.Residents can pick up groceries in the neighborhood from Whole Foods Market. Grasmere has a couple of other retail stores, like Home Depot and Staples, and there are more stores about a mile away on Post Road. There, shoppers can peruse Marshalls, Designer Shoe Warehouse and several others.
