Laurel Highland views and an escape from city life

If you're describing Fairfield Township to a non-local, you're probably talking about the stunning Laurel Highland views. This is a thickly wooded region with residential streets that wind like estuaries through narrow openings, sparsely patterned with modest homes. Buyers relocate to Fairfield Township to be away from it all, but still within an hour or so of city amenities.

Lower taxes and private landscapes

From small-town living in central Bolivar to greener, private landscapes in the foothills, locals can explore a range of getaways. Fairfield Township's early 20th-century charmers sell for around $100,000. If dormer windows and broad front porches aren't your style, simple brick ranch builds list for around the same amount. These homes are often multigenerational properties and don't change hands often. On the hunt for a secluded backwoods cabin? You can buy these rustic homes with acreage by the 20s and 30s in Fairfield. These can also be a rare find, starting at $300,000 and climbing into the multi-millions for something extra-spacious. "Taxes are lower here, which can draw people in," says Pat S., a 70-year resident. Listings tend to stick around for a few months in this rural area.

Highway travel along Route 222

Fairfield Township is roughly 50 miles directly east of Pittsburgh by way of the nearby highway that feeds directly into the city. "Our main artery is Route 222, which gets you into the city within 35 to 40 minutes," Pat says. Fairfield is a car-dependent area, but you'll find city buses in Ligonier next door.
