Columbia River, multiple lakes and mountain hiking
The city has several parks scattered across town, and Fairview is surrounded by Oregon’s Columbia River, Blue Lake, Fairview Lake and nearby mountains. “There’s fishing and boat launching on the river,” says York. “There are also two lakes. There’s a lot to do at Blue Lake, like swimming and boating. Fairview Lake is for kayaking, not for powerboats. We’re closer to Mount Hood, and the Columbia River Gorge is close, so it’s good for outdoorsy people.” The city has a large RV park near the lakes that attracts tourists from around the country. Further inland Salish Ponds Wetland Park is popular with people who want to fish or explore nature trails.

A mix of house styles in Fairview
Fairview is a mix of older housing stock with a unique mix of single-family homes. There are options ranging from townhouses and manufactured homes to ranch-styles and Modern Traditional homes. Single-family homes sell for a median of $545,000, which is about $40,000 less than the median price of homes in Portland. Some properties come with waterfront views and, subsequently, a higher price tag. These homes on the water are mostly midcentury modern styles, and many come with docks and decks for enjoying the views and proximity to the water.

Commuting to Portland
While bus lines circulate from Fairview to Portland, most residents drive. Interstate 84 and State Route 30 run through Fairview. “It’s very convenient,” says York. “It’s great for people who commute to Portland for work but don’t want to live in the city.” Portland sits 15 miles west of Fairview and can typically be reached in a half hour or less. Portland is also home to the nearest commercial airport. Troutdale Airport, a private airport and flying school, sits outside Fairview's eastern edge. “We do get some noise from the commercial and private airports, but it’s not too bad,” says York.
Fairview events
The city has a few events throughout the year, like an Easter egg hunt and Christmas tree lighting. York says Flicks in the Park, a summer movie series, is popular for families.
City crime rates
The Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office has served the city since 2017. According to data from the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office, reported violent and property crime instances were up in 2024 from the 2023 rates.
Kids can attend Reynolds School District
The Reynolds School District serves the city. Niche awards the district an overall grade of C-minus. Fairview Elementary, Salish Ponds Elementary, Woodland Elementary, and Reynolds Middle School are in the city. Reynolds High School, located in neighboring Troutdale, earns a C.
