Fargo’s first neighborhood
Century-old trees rise above the original townsite of Fargo along the streets of the historic Hawthorne neighborhood. “Hawthorne is the oldest neighborhood in Fargo,” says Jenny Buhr, Realtor with Trilogy Real Estate and President of Doorsteps Midwest, a non-profit that offers education for first-time homeowners. “The past 10-15 years, it’s become a really sought out neighborhood because people have been not just tearing down the houses and building new, they’ve been renovating and bringing back the old character of the homes. You see these big huge houses with old maids quarters, people are just refinishing them and bringing them back up to what they once were.” Quaint glass globe streetlights line the streets through the heart of the neighborhood, conjuring a different era. But it’s not just character and history – top schools, expansive parks and convenience to downtown Fargo all combine to make Hawthorne a desirable neighborhood.
Eclectic and protected century-old historic homes
“I love the Hawthorne neighborhood; it’s so old, and the houses there are so unique!” says Buhr, “The character there, oh my god, it’s the most amazing thing. They have a lot of historic houses, classified by the city of Fargo as historic homes that can’t ever be demolished.” Charm and character are two words used most often to talk about this neighborhood which features Victorian-influenced farmhouses, Cape Cods, square Italianates, Tudor-influenced estates and more sitting side-by-side along the tree-lined streets. While these older homes feature detached one- and two-car garages, newer construction options within the community come with attached storage. Condos from the 1960s and 70s generally sell for $100,000 to $200,000, while those from the 80s to the present-day can go for between $250,000 and $500,000. Single-family homes sell for between $150,000 and $450,000; while larger historic homes with footprints of 4,000 square feet or more – and often featuring six or more bedrooms – can go for $600,000 to $900,000.

The oldest park in the city and more, along the Red River
“Island Park is one of the most well-known parks there,” says Buhr, “They do Yoga in the Park there all the time.” Fargo’s first park, dating back to 1910, Island Park has a gazebo, numerous tennis courts, a basketball court and walking trails, all under the thickest canopy of trees found within the city limits. It’s also home to the Island Park Pool, where thorough renovations will be completed in time for the 2025 pool season. Just south of Island Park, Dill Hill is home to softball and kickball leagues, with two baseball/softball fields. Dike West Park is home to a skate park, while Dike East Park features a dog park, two boat ramps and a walking bridge over the Red River. Anglers can be seen casting lines from the banks throughout the spring and summer months.

A poignant remembrance and multiple festivals
Island Park is a center of activity. Beyond the regular Yoga in the Park events, it’s also home to the poignant Angel of Hope, one of the 150 or so Christmas Box Angel statues in the country. “The Angel of Hope Statue, every December, they have a candlelight memorial service for those who have lost a child,” says Buhr. Come summertime, the Midwest Kid Fest is a free festival for kids held each June. It includes a parade, life-sized games, a petting zoo and live entertainment. Later in summer, the Island Park Show is a juried arts and crafts festival featuring local artists accompanied by food vendors and musicians. A few blocks farther north, July’s Downtown Fargo Street Fair means three days of food, shopping and entertainment, while the Fargo Civic Center hosts a cascade of regular events.

Having fun in the Fargo snow
Fargo isn’t just about snow, but Fargoans know that Hawthorne is the spot for winter fun. “Hawthorne is right next to the Dike; it’s a popular sledding destination in the wintertime. Lots of kids go there to go sledding, families, kids, everybody,” says Buhr. Over six weekends in January and February, Frostival brings events to various parks and rinks around the city in an effort to keep the winter blues at bay.
Tons of options to travel in and around Hawthorne
With bike lanes, quiet side streets, wide sidewalks and MATBUS Routes 14 and 15 ringing the neighborhood, Hawthorne provides plenty of ways to leave the car at home. Even at the furthest point, Downtown Fargo is only a mile away for residents, and many will walk to work or to shopping and dining regularly. Roughly 4 miles away, Essentia Health provides 24-hour emergency care and is usually within a 10-minute drive. 4 miles in the other direction, Hector International Airport provides regional and national commercial flights. Residents don’t have to travel far for worship, as the neighborhood offers established congregations, including Temple Beth El, Grace Lutheran Church, Cornerstone Baptist Church and St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church.
